Over the last couple of years, greater attention has been paid to the harmful ingredients found in our daily beauty products. We have grown more conscious of how we treat our skin and what we put on our faces, seeking out clean alternatives to add to our skincare and makeup routines.

While clean beauty can be defined in a number of ways (and we have a guide to help decode them), it most broadly refers to products that are free from harmful ingredients. It often overlaps with products that highlight natural ingredients that are cruelty-free, vegan, and/or ethically sourced, meaning that they are not only good for you but for the planet.

Clean beauty once was more common on the shelves of Whole Foods than in Sephora, but now there are a growing number of high-performing brands that prioritize clean formulas. To help you in your search, L’OFFICIEL rounds up 15 of the best clean beauty brands to know in order to create a full skincare and makeup routine.

The Feelist

A collection of luxury self-care and skincare products, the Feelist promises superpowered products infused with the highest quality, clean, and plant-based ingredients. Its selection of botanically-rich offerings ranges from nourishing salt soaks to deeply hydrating body lotions, and the best-selling Most Wanted Radiant Facial Oil literally flies off the shelves.

Tower 28 Beauty

Based in sunny California, this female-founded beauty brand features a variety of makeup products designed to give you that effortless, summer glow all year round. Made without animal byproducts and free of an extensive list of potentially harmful ingredients, Tower 28 continues expanding its skin-saving products with its newest glowy Beach Please Luminous Tinted Balms.

Highr Collective

Meant “to sustainably innovate clean beauty products for today’s modern woman,” Highr Collective offers a selection of lipsticks formulated with 100 percent clean, solar energy. In addition to its eco-friendly production, the ingredients themselves include organic plant butter and oils meant to plump, soothe, and effectively nourish your lips.

This skin-centric beauty brand is focused on carefully selecting conscious and clean ingredients to help you achieve a natural vibrance. Aside from offering sustainable packaging through the use of recycled materials, Ilia takes steps to celebrate diversity and inclusivity. Delivering a light-coverage, its Super Serum Skin Tint SPF 40 includes a newly expanded offering of 30 shades.

Kosas has a blacklist of 2,700 ingredients, only using clean and botanical formulas made to nourish the skin. Made from a well-thought, curation of skin-friendly oils—avocado, meadowfoam, red raspberry, jojoba, camellia, and rosehip—its Tinted Face Oil Foundation is a super product meant to plump, brighten, moisturize, soothe, and nourish your complexion.

Born in 2019, Róen offers a fusion of luxe and clean makeup products that are non-toxic and do not compromise on performance or wearability. Vegan, gluten-free, and cruelty-free, like all of its cosmetics, the beautiful 11:11 Eyeshadow Palette features four shimmering shades made without talc, parabens, nanoparticles, or fragrance.

An effective and trustworthy brand, Pai is accredited by the Soil Association certifying that its “organic products” are truly organic. The UK-based brand has proudly passed strict toxicity and biodegradability guidelines earning a non-GM certificate. One of its latest releases is Free Bird, the brand's first-ever hand serum made with organic emollients, vitamin E, and prebiotic inulin perfect to use alongside hand sanitizer.

Emma Lewisham

Named after its founder, this clean beauty brand is all about the co-existence between sustainability and luxury. Its selection of products is made from vetted high-performing natural ingredients that Lewisham and her team spent three years developing. The brand's Skin Reset Vitamin C serum is a great product to start with to see just how effacacious the natural formulas are.

Dedicated to delivering “Comfort and care, for all skin and hair,” Fur's mission is to create natural beauty products for every inch of the body. Formulated from vegan, cruelty-free, and non-toxic ingredients, Fur stays away from mineral oils, silicones, parabens, synthetic fragrances, and artificial dyes. The result? Products that are safe to use in all areas, especially the intimate and most-sensitive ones. Its signature product, the Fur Oil, is clinically proven to soften hair and clear pores, keeping ingrowns at bay.

RMS Beauty

Made from uncompromised ingredients, the RMS Beauty “Un” Cover-Up foundation, and concealer is comprised of a clean formula made from organic jojoba oil, organic cocoa seed butter, and organic coconut oil, providing a naturally dewy and nourishing finish. RMS Beauty was founded 11 years ago by makeup artist Rose-Marie Swift, and it has become one of the leading brands in clean beauty.

Oui the People

Oui the People is not only an economical, environmentally-friendly, and clean-conscious brand, it is also committed to body positivity and inclusivity. As the name states, it is a brand created for all people. Its Tone It Around Set is the ultimate package for achieving softer and hydrated skin post-shave.

Serumkind is a K-beauty label based around vegan, cruelty-free, non GMO face serums for any skin type or condition. With each serum centered around a potent natural ingredient, the products deliver hydration, strength, and more. Its newest Chaga Charging Drop contains powerful mushroom extract that has been clinically tested.

While Dieux wouldn't call itself a clean brand due to the inconsistencies and subjectivity that clean beauty labeling is guilty of, it does deliver cruelty-free, vegan, and safe formulas with the added bonus of price transparency and sustainable packaging. You'll be lucky to find the reusable Forever Eye Mask in stock, and its new Awakening Hand Sanitizer is a pandemic essential.

It's a fact that the U.S. has less regulations around which cosmetic ingredients are deemed harmful than in Europe, so your best bet for clean beauty may be to look abroad. Launching in the U.S. on February 22, Typology is a B-Corp Certified brand that offers affordable skincare and body products for a variety of concerns, made with minimalist, nature-focused formulas. If you're looking to simplify your routing, the 9-ingredient Face Moisturizer is a great place to start.

Farmacy Beauty

Farmacy Beauty uses natural ingredients for farm-to-face skincare with transparent sourcing, much of which comes from local farms that the brand has partnered with. You probably already know about the fan-favorite Green Clean Cleansing Balm, but Farmacy has you covered for everything from lip care to targeted treatments.
