As fashion legend Gabrielle "Coco" Chanel once said, "A woman who cuts her hair is about to change her life." In the past few weeks, many women across social media, the red carpet, and beyond have embraced the iconic pixie cut in all its variations this summer.
From stars like Gracie Abrams and Teyana Taylor becoming known for rocking the short haircut to Zendaya tapping into the well-known style for recent press tours, the hairdo defines elegance, grace, and liberation that has graced many for decades now. But this phenomenon is nothing new. The&nbsp;
The cropped hairstyle is usually short on the back and sides, maintains length on the top, and features very tiny bangs. However, the bixie, part bob, part pixie, has also garnered attention for many who are stuck with how to style their hair that falls in the middle of the two cuts. Naturally, the cut is half-done, casual, and bold.
Back in the early 1800s, French women sported the Titus look, a style similar to the haircuts of individuals who were eventually executed by guillotine. For the time period, it makes sense that the cut didn't last, and women went back to long hair before a great contender entered the conversation: the Bob.

Many flappers of the 1920s became known for their hairdos as they performed in jazz clubs in hubs like Harlem. But the do faded in the following decades, and long hair was back in style once again. Yet, a subtle yet widespread appearance of the pixie cut would make itself known in the 1953 romantic comedy film Roman Holiday.
Often referred to as the woman who popularized short hair, Audrey Hepburn's iconic pixie cut is a feature that can't be separated from the actress, especially since it made her stand out from other leading women of the era. Eventually, stars like Jean Seberg, Mia Farrow, Twiggy, and Edie Sedgwick picked up the cut and furthered the style's impact on culture.
Like its predecessors, the pixie took a brief hiatus from the heads of stars. Until a model-turned-actress named Demi Moore wore the crop in the 1990 supernatural romance movie Ghost. Not only was the film the top-grossing project of the year, but she continued Hepburn's legacy while honoring the nonconforming hairstyle.
The pixie cut made waves throughout the rest of the decade, with stars like Julia Roberts, Winona Ryder, Madonna, Linda Evangelista, Princess Diana, and Cyndi Lauper adding their own touch to the perm. Eventually, Halle Berry wore the pixie in the 2002 action spy film Die Another Day and stuck with the cut for years.

Instead of fading away, the pixie cut held a major hold on society throughout the 2010s. Jennifer Lawrence's red-carpet run with a dirty-blond do, Miley Cyrus' controversial yet fun "Bangerz" era, and Charlize Theron's debut at the 2013 Academy Awards not only had people talking but also inspired others to chop off their locks and embrace a short, freeing style.
In the latter half of the decade, the pixie had everyone in a trance. Emilia Clarke, Katy Perry, and Cara Delevingne rocked bold blond hues while Scarlett Johansson, Cardi B, and Natalie Portman held the fort down in the darker shades category. If there was a hairdo that was quintessentially 2010, it was the pixie.
A few years later, French beauty pageant titleholder Eve Gilles became the first woman with short hair to win Miss France in 2024, even amidst the criticism and bullying she experienced. Now, talents like Keke Palmer and Quinta Brunson have become well-associated with the empowering style.&nbsp;
Even though the cut is widely considered controversial, the pixie has continued to serve as a form of self-expression during difficult times. Sure, some might say it's a "cry for help" or "sign of crisis." Despite that, I consider it a rebirth, a reintroduction, a revival of self-assurance and a resurgence of one's confidence.
