Thom Browne shrinks us down to size, transforming his signature tailoring through the whimsical world of insects and metamorphosis.

At Thom Browne, a suit is rarely just a suit. For more than two decades, the designer has pulled apart the conventions of classic American tailoring and rebuilt them through his own precise proportions. For Spring/Summer 2027, that exercise in transformation becomes quite literal. This season, Browne takes us into the grass, shrinking his models down to the scale of butterflies, beetles, bees, and other garden critters.
Sounds of crickets and insects fill the room, and at the center of it all sits a cocoon, setting up the metamorphosis that unfolds across the collection.
Browne's garden is colorful, strange, and meticulously constructed. His familiar tailoring remains the foundation, though at times it is stacked four or five pieces deep. Shirts disappear beneath vests, which are layered beneath more vests and trenches. Plaid, tweed, checks, and Browne's signature red, white, and blue stripes bring the clothes back to the codes of the house, even as their proportions grow increasingly exaggerated.

Look closer, though, and you'll uncover something much more whimsical. Bees, ants, butterflies, and dragonflies are worked into coats, skirts, and other pieces through embroidery, appliqué, and intarsia. Tweeds are woven to resemble green grass and pink flowers, while one trench features rows of emerald gems that mimic ants marching in line. Another is covered with tufts of moss-like embroidery.
There is an impressive amount of construction beneath all of that whimsy. Browne uses tailoring to manipulate the body into the shapes of the creatures inhabiting his world. Ballooning skirts and rounded outerwear change the models' proportions, while corsetry, structured jackets, pleating, and densely layered separates create their own versions of exoskeletons. Elsewhere, mesh, silk, tweed, Oxford cloth, and plaid are pieced together to mimic the markings of different beetles.
Accessories take the idea to its most playful extreme. Grasshoppers become clutches, butterfly wings cover bags, and heels take the forms of bees, dragonflies, caterpillars, and ladybugs. The beauty follows suit: blunt bangs fall across the eyes, woven and netted headpieces alter the shape of the head, and blue lips punctuate the otherwise garden-heavy palette.

For all its spectacle, there is plenty here that can live beyond the runway. Remove the insect styling and extreme layering, and the collection offers sharply constructed trenches, plaid tailoring, textured knits, leather jackets, pleated skirts, vests, and bags that can easily stand on their own. Even the more literal accessories have the novelty factor that can turn a runway idea into a recognizable object. Browne gives the collection a fantasy big enough for the runway while keeping familiar house signatures underneath it.
As the show moves toward its finale, the garden becomes darker. Black silk, corsetry, and leather enter the mix, including a black widow-inspired look marked with red.
A parade of butterflies moves through the space in pleated skirts that sway around the body, bringing the collection's idea of metamorphosis full circle. Model Kai Schreiber, whose dance background makes her especially fitting for the moment, is among those who help turn the finale into something closer to performance.

Finally comes Browne's bride. Wing-like panels frame the face above a cropped satin jacket and corseted waist, while an asymmetrical pleated skirt trails behind. After a collection that studies transformation from every possible angle, she feels like its final stage.
For Spring/Summer 2027, Browne doesn't abandon the uniform that has defined his career. He subjects it to another transformation. Underneath the wings, moss, insects, and theatrical proportions are the jackets, trenches, pleats, and precise tailoring that have always made up his world.
