Fashion has always been in thrall to the body. But every so often, a designer does something stranger than flatter it—they turn it inside out. Anatomical fashion, the practice of rendering bones, muscles, organs, and skin as the garment itself, is one of the medium's oldest and most subversive traditions: a way of confronting mortality, desire, and the uncanny all at once. And right now, as <a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/fashion/elsa-schiaparelli-museum-exhibition-musee-des-arts-decoratifs-paris">surrealism</a> creeps back onto the runway and gold rib cages dominate the red carpet, the body-as-design is having another moment.
From Elsa <a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/fashion/history-of-maison-schiaparelli-elsa-schiaparelli-shocking-pink-daniel-roseberry">Schiaparelli's</a> skeletons to <a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/fashion/daniel-roseberry-schiaparelli-fashion-designer-an-american-in-paris">Daniel Roseberry</a>'s gilded lungs, the impulse to wear our own anatomy has never really gone away. It shocks, it seduces, and it insists that the most radical material in fashion has always been the human form. Below, a look at how anatomical design became one of fashion's most enduring provocations.

<h2 dir="ltr" style="text-align: center;">A Surrealist Inheritance</h2>

The genre's patron saint is Elsa <a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/fashion-week/schiaparelli-paris-couture-week-fall-winter-2025-whale-tail-thong-revival-history">Schiaparelli</a>. The Italian-born couturière spent the 1930s as <a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/fashion/gabrielle-chanel-nickname-coco">Coco Chanel</a>'s great rival and fashion's foremost surrealist, collaborating with artists like <a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/art/best-salvador-dali-artist-quotes">Salvador Dalí</a> and Jean Cocteau on garments that behaved more like provocations than clothes—the Lobster Dress, the Tears Dress, the Shoe Hat, and the "shocking pink" that became her signature.&nbsp;
Her 1938 Skeleton Dress, made with Dalí for her&nbsp;Circus collection, remains the purest distillation of that vision: a slinky black crepe gown with ribs, spine, and leg bones raised from the fabric through exaggerated trapunto quilting, so that the wearer appeared to carry her skeleton on the outside of her body.&nbsp;
To many contemporaries it was an affront to good taste; to fashion, it was a revelation—the first time a garment dared to make the macabre chic. Schiaparelli believed that "in difficult times, fashion is always outrageous," and though her house fell dormant after 1954, that philosophy would prove impossible to kill.

If <a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/fashion/celebrity-front-row-schiaparelli-haute-couture-spring-summer-2025">Schiaparelli</a> made anatomy surreal, <a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/fashion/how-thierry-mugler-empowered-women-through-his-outlandish-designs">Thierry Mugler</a> made it superhuman. Across the 1980s and '90s, the French designer built a career on the theatrical, hourglass "glamazon"—a vision of woman as a kind of magnificent machine, all impossible waistlines and armored shoulders.
It culminated in his 1995 Haute Couture show, staged as a 20th-anniversary spectacle, where he sent out a science-fiction "cyborg" suit: a body-molded catsuit of chrome panels and clear plexiglass that exposed a glossy, mechanized "flesh" beneath, part pin-up, part robot. Working in metal, latex, PVC, and molded chrome,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/fashion/thierry-mugler-fall-1995-couture-fashion-show">Mugler</a> treated the body not as something fragile to be draped but as a structure to be engineered.
That fembot fantasy never faded—it roars back every time a modern star raids the archive. When <a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/fashion/zendaya-spider-man-brand-new-day-press-tour-looks-outfits-fashion-tom-holland">Zendaya</a> stepped out in Mugler's original 1995 robot suit, chrome limbs and all, she proved the point three decades later, and the house <a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/fashion/casey-cadwallader-mugler-creative-director">Casey Cadwallader</a> has revived since 2018 keeps the lineage alive.

<h2 dir="ltr" style="text-align: center;">Gold Anatomy and the Modern Revival</h2>

The current wave belongs, fittingly, to <a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/fashion-week/schiaparelli-spring-summer-2021-haute-couture">Schiaparelli</a> again—resurrected by Daniel Roseberry, the Texas-born, evangelical-raised designer who spent a decade at <a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/men/thom-browne-fashion-designer-interview-20th-anniversary">Thom Browne</a> before becoming, in 2019 at just 33, the first American ever to lead a French couture house. 
Roseberry sketches his collections by hand and treats the maison's surrealist DNA as living material, rendering it in glinting gold. Since his arrival he has turned lungs, ribs, ears, eyes, molars, fingers, toes, and even nipples into precious jewelry and molded breastplates—as his&nbsp;<a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/fashion/fall-winter-2026-fashion-campaigns-trends-photos-inspiration-looks-jackets-coats">Fall/Winter 2026</a> couture torso makes plain—marrying the discipline of couture with a jolt of the grotesque.

The high-water mark came when <a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/fashion/bella-hadid-country-girl-summer-style-inspiration-cowboy-chic-clothes-how-to-wear">Bella Hadid</a> wore his gilded lung necklace on the <a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/fashion/cannes-film-festival-best-red-carpet-fashion">Cannes</a> red carpet, its bronchial branches spilling across her chest in a piece that read as equal parts anatomy diagram and objet d'art. From <a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/fashion/dua-lipa-street-style-inspiration-what-does-dua-lipa-wear-electric-lady-studios-new-album">Dua Lipa</a>'s skeletal beading to that viral necklace, <a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/fashion-week/celebrities-at-schiaparelli-haute-couture-fall-2025-show-paris-cardi-b-dua-lipa-hunter-schafer">Schiaparelli</a> has become the most screenshotted name on any carpet—proof that the house's own maxim still holds. In an age of collective anxiety, fashion once again turns to the body, and to the outrageous, to make sense of things.

<h2 dir="ltr" style="text-align: center;">Beyond the Shock</h2>

Not all anatomical fashion is designed to unsettle; some of it is pure wonder. For Dutch designer <a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/fashion/iris-van-herpen-avant-garde-runway-moments">Iris van Herpen</a>—who cut her teeth interning at <a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/fashion/alexander-mcqueen-iconic-runway-shows-designer-lee-mcqueen-fashion-history">Alexander McQueen</a>, himself a maestro of the skeletal and the spinal—the body is a site of scientific awe. In 2010, just three years into her label, she became the first designer to send a 3-D-printed garment down a runway, a shell-like sculpture from her Crystallization collection made with architect Daniel Widrig. 
Since then, using laser-cutting, heat-molding, and biomimicry, she has built otherworldly gowns that echo musculature, membranes, and the organic systems humming beneath the skin—clothing as an extension, and a mutation, of the body itself, now the subject of museum retrospectives from Paris to New York.

<a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/fashion/rei-kawakubo-history-comme-des-garcons">Rei Kawakubo</a> pushed the idea somewhere else entirely: her Spring/Summer 1997 Comme des Garçons collection, Body Meets Dress, Dress Meets Body—nicknamed "Lumps and Bumps"—padded gingham garments with goose-down growths that redistributed the human silhouette, challenging every Western assumption about where a body is "supposed" to swell. Between van Herpen's futurism and Kawakubo's radical distortion, anatomy becomes a tool for inquiry and awe, not just provocation.

<h2 dir="ltr" style="text-align: center;">Why the Body Endures</h2>

Today, the tradition has migrated from the runway to the step-and-repeat, where the exposed spine, the molded torso, and the skeletal back have become a red-carpet dialect all their own. What Schiaparelli and Dalí once staged as shock, a new generation wears as high glamour—the body's architecture rendered in beads, crystal, and gold.
Strip fashion down and this is what remains: the body, the one thing every garment is ultimately about. Anatomical design simply makes that relationship literal, dragging what's hidden into the light—our fragility, our machinery, our mortality—and rendering it beautiful. It is fashion's memento mori, a reminder tucked inside beauty that we are, all of us, bones and organs and skin.
That is why the tradition never dies, only mutates: from <a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/art/salvador-dali-clemmer-an-encounter-a-work-at-10-corso-como-new-york">Dalí'</a>s stitched ribs to <a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/fashion-week/mugler-spring-summer-2026-runway-looks-nipple-piercing-sheer-naked">Mugler's</a> chrome to Roseberry's gold to van Herpen's printed sinew, each generation finds a new material for the same ancient idea. And as long as the body remains the medium's greatest muse, the most shocking thing a designer can do is show us exactly what we're made of.
