The fun and fearless designer used her Spring/Summer 1999 show to make her clearest case yet for joy over restraint, and people are still loving it today.

Betsey Johnson built her Spring/Summer 1999 show on the dichotomy she returned to often, sending her sweetheart vs. vixen collection down the runway and closing it out as she always did, with a cartwheel. Staged a season apart from the simplicity dominating the rest of fashion week, Johnson’s show broke up much of the late '90s minimalism, leaning into louder prints and exaggerated girliness throughout her designs.&nbsp;
This 1998 show was everything but experimental for Johnson, whose past was rooted in color and confidence. After designing under a series of other labels for a decade, she launched her own label in 1978, working to build her business and persona around the single idea that fashion should be fun first and everything else second. She talked often about wanting her clothes to be affordable and joyful, rather than aspirational in the traditional sense. Her label by the late '90s was commercially serious, beginning what is now referred to as her “New York” label era, putting Spring/Summer 1999 right at the height of her design output.&nbsp;

This show specifically played into Johnson’s classic contrast, pitting the sweetness of a schoolgirl silhouette against an alternative style. Babydoll dresses and tiered, girlish shapes shared the runway with more overtly sexy pieces, teetering on the line between innocence and edge. These ideas together created an almost lingerie-inspired line that toyed with pieces like lace pants, sheer tops, big florals, ruffled skirts, and bustiers.
In addition to her own sense of maximalist energy, another part of what made this show so iconic was the runway casting. Johnson’s show featured some of the era’s most recognizable modeling talent, including Adriana Lima, who walked the runway, showing off the collection’s '90s boudoir glam.&nbsp;

This collection kickstarted an obsession that carried Johnson through the next decade, riffing off similar concepts and keeping Johnson’s spectacularity alive. Even some of the pieces from this very show are being worn today, and just this year, Jennie from Blackpink was styled in an entire look from the collection onstage in Boston. The current knack for nostalgia and archival fashion only feeds the obsession more, but even without it, this collection still remains as iconic as ever.
