There is something deeply fulfilling about building something with your own two hands. Our Fall Fashion Issue is shaped by people who have done exactly that. Our global cover star, actor and humanitarian Angelina Jolie, is entering a new chapter—one rooted in community. Now that her children are grown, Jolie is free to follow her creative spirit wherever it leads, with ambitious plans to expand Atelier Jolie worldwide. “It takes a little longer and it's harder, but when you build something organically with real friends and real artists,” she tells L’OFFICIEL, “it's more authentic and a little bold.” Jolie reflects on this collective, along with her latest directorial effort, in "A Life Without Borders."
That impulse is shared by the next generation of designers showing at New York Fashion Week. Many of “New York’s New Guard” didn’t wait for an internship, a mentor, or a prescribed path. Instead, they built their labels on instinct—along with dead-stock, an engineering degree, a chance encounter with a bronze mermaid, and plenty of grit. From Meruert Tolegen to Zoe Gustavia Anna Whalen, they’re already dressing some of the city’s most influential women while defying the tired claim that New York Fashion Week is dead.
"There was no blueprint waiting for me,” says makeup visionary and Louis Vuitton Creative Director of Cosmetics Pat McGrath as she opens her archive for <a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/beauty/pat-mcgrath-interview-quotes-louis-vuitton-collaboration-la-beaute-infrarouge-dune-collections" target="_blank" rel="noopener">this edition of L’LOOKBACK</a>. Now, she brings her inventive approach to a limited-edition lip and eye collection celebrating the maison’s 130th anniversary. Elsewhere in the issue, we get a first look at Maria Grazia Chiuri’s debut collection for Fendi—a new chapter for one of fashion’s most storied houses and one of its most beloved creative directors. And artist Tschabalala Self, renowned for her work with textiles, discusses a practice that weaves together memory, material, and color.
And, of course, no September issue is complete without the season’s most essential pieces—the ones worth creating a wardrobe around, and that will endure well beyond this season. Because the best things in life—community, fashion, art—are built to last.
