When it comes to the world of modelling, one tend to solely think about the women who have massively contributed to the space. Naomi Campbell, Kate Moss, Cindy Crawford, Kaia Gerber, Kendall Jenner, Hailey Bieber and the Hadid sisters are some of the countless models who have made their impact known for future talents.
However, there's an entire roaster of familiar faces that you may or may have thought of about in conversation at all: male models. Although many associate men who work in the modeling industry as Zoolander prototypes, the history spans farther than you'd think.
Traced back to the early 20th century, models that portrayed masculine features began to arise in catalogues and eventually became widely-known in the 1950s with the help of mainstream popularity. Now, the profession has continued to evolve and transform as designers release their latest collections.

Tyson Beckford on the Ralph Lauren Fall/Winter 2022 runway.

Born in the Bronx, Jamaican-American model and actor Tyson Beckford is easily one of the most successful male models the industry has seen. When he was approached by Erik Lauren Counsel to appear in hip hop magazine The Source in 1992, Beckford agreed and wasn't sure of where it would end up. A year later, Ralph Lauren recruited him as the main model for the Polo line of mens sportswear. Appearing in music videos of the likes of Toni Braxton, Brittany Spears, Mariah Carey, and Lizzo, Beckford continues to appear on television and attend fashion events.

With a background in dancing, Alton Mason was signed to a modeling agency after a 2015 BET performance with P Diddy. Ever since then, the model has walked for brands like Yeezy, Gucci, Hugo Boss, Versace, Tom Ford, Louis Vuitton, Rabanne, Balenciaga, and Lacoste. In fact, he was chosen by Karl Lagerfeld as the first black male model to walk for the brand. As of September 2023, Mason is the highest-paid male supermodel and continues to make memorable splashes on and off the runway.

Taiwanese-Canadian model and actor Godfrey Gao broke ground by becoming the first male Asian model to appear in a campaign for Louis Vuitton in 2011.

Known as Asia's first male supermodel, Taiwanese-Canadian model and actor Godfrey Gao was a force to be reckoned with. After his family had moved to Canada, he returned to Taiwan in 2004 to work as a model. Famously, he became the first Asian model for Louis Vuitton through a campaign. Godfrey was featured on multiple magazine covers, made appearances on Chinese television, and starred in multiple films. On November 27, 2019, he collapsed during filming and was pronounced dead a few hours later.

If you want to talk about influential male models, you can't skip German model Leon Dame. Despite the fact that his first modeling gig was for a Sacai show in 2015, he made a huge impact in the industry. At the age of 17, Dame modeled for brands like Alexander McQueen, Jil Sander, and Gucci. Yet, it was the his walk at the Maison Margiela Spring/Summer 2020 show in the Paris Grand Palais that deemed him too iconic.

Born and raised in Utah, Lucky Blue Smith was surrounded by creative family members. From his hobbyist musician father to his mother and sisters all being models, his trajectory into the fashion industry was too perfect. Yet, when Lucky and his sister were photographed by Hedi Slimane for Vogue Homme Japan, he garned much attention from fans and newcomers alike. The model has worked for Bottega Veneta, Roberto Cavalli, DSquared2, Salavatore Ferragamo, and Michael Kors, amongst other brands. Lucky is married to social media influencer Nara Smith and have four children together.

Everyone's favorite cheeky British ginger has made the list! Calum Harper had his start in modeling by walking for British-Chinese label Mithridate at London Fashion Week in 2022. While in the process of landing more gigs, Harper would capture the behind-the-scenes process of being casted in shows. From walking for labels such as Zegna, Hermés, and Diesel to his acting debut in The Devil Wears Prada 2, the model isn't going anywhere for quite a while.

Ever since he opened up Stuart Vevers' first menswear collection for Coach in 2015, Kit Butler has become a regular on the runway and in campaigns. The British-born model moved to Italy with his family for a while before returning to the United Kingdom to major in sports science. However, when he was scouted as a model while building an aerdrome with his uncle, collaborations with Louis Vuitton, Calvin Klein, and Balenciaga have kept his busy. Butler won Model of the Year in 2018, 2023, and 2025 and has been nominated for countless modeling awards.

British-Korean model and artist Sang Woo Kim has always held a creative eye. While growing up in London under a Korean household, Kim loved to draw and paint. This love led him to studying fine art at Goldsmiths, University of London. At the age of 19, he began to work as a model after being scouted near King's Cross. Notably, Kim has modelled for brands like Burberry, Kenzo, DKNY, Dolce &amp; Gabbana, and Fendi. Recently, he has focused more on his art, which mainly consists of self-portraits.

In the world of modeling, certain looks weren't prominently featured on the runway. However, when model, recording artist, and actor Shaun Ross stepped onto the scene, he was the first professionalmale model with albinism. From his 2018 collaboration with designer Nina Athanasiou for the "In My Skin" clothing line to working with Givenchy, Alexander McQueen, and Nylon, Ross now makes music, participates in the ballroom scene in New York and Los Angeles, and married actor David Alan Madrick in 2022.

To conclude the list is the one, the only David Gandy. The English model was discovered after winning a modelling competition on ITV's This Morning. Even though his roommate entered him into the competition without his knowledge, Gandy ultimately scored a contract with Select Model Management and shortly leave univeristy to pursue the career full-time. Zara, Caroline Herrera, and Massimo Dutti were brands that he worked with on a consistent basis. Best known for his appearances in Dolce &amp; Gabanna "Light Blue" campaigns and being the brand's lead male model, Gangy wrote blogs under publications like British Vogue and The Daily Telegraph. Now, he owns and serves as creative director of David Gandy Wellwear.
