Across the world, the industry's leading jewelers are revisiting icons of the past.&nbsp;

Jonathan Anderson&rsquo;s Spring/Summer 2026 haute couture debut for Dior unfolded as a dynamic wunderkammer, a curated display of museum-quality objects preserved through transformation. Eighteenth-century portrait miniatures by John Smart and Rosalba Carriera, originally intimate love tokens worn on necklaces and bracelets, were reborn as brooches framed with pearls, bows, and hand-painted orchids. That impulse to awaken sleeping beauties resonates today across the jewelry world, from Parisian jeweler Elie Top&rsquo;s M&eacute;tamorphose practice, converting clients&rsquo; heirlooms into bespoke creations, to the upcycled vintage pieces of independent Los Angeles designers Emily P. Wheeler, Maison Adela, and Garland Collection. At the world&rsquo;s premier art and antiques fair TEFAF in Maastricht, these dialogues between past and present were unmistakable, as makers and maisons continue to mine history for what comes next.

&ldquo;Jewelers today are the biggest recyclers,&rdquo; says Christian Hemmerle, a fourth-generation jeweler at the helm of the Munich-based house his great-grandfather founded in 1893, known for incorporating Byzantine coins, Roman cameos, and Japanese ceramic buckles into contemporary creations. &ldquo;Antiques take on new life.&rdquo; Krishna Choudhary, a tenth-generation jeweler behind London atelier Santi, established in 2019, applies the same inventive approach to historic stones. He draws on a legacy dating to 1727, when the Choudharys established ties with the Royal Court of Jaipur, to rework treasures from his family&rsquo;s haveli into contemporary designs in white gold, platinum, and titanium. &ldquo;It would be a sin to really touch her,&rdquo; Choudhary says of an unusually cut 18th-century Colombian emerald set upside down in a cocktail ring, its step faceting exposed.
Ren&eacute; Boivin, a French house founded in 1890 and dormant since the early 1990s, reemerged starfish-like with jewels reflecting the sea star&rsquo;s regeneration: a 1938 ruby cabochon brooch paired with new gold-and-diamond earrings by Thomas Torroni-Levene.

Buccellati similarly juxtaposed vintage and new, with a 1970s Gianmaria Buccellati green tourmaline necklace beside his son Andrea Buccellati&rsquo;s emerald iteration. &ldquo;Our clients like to buy new pieces with vintage so they can mix them together,&rdquo; Buccellati CEO Nicolas Luchsinger observes.

When Van Cleef &amp; Arpels launched its Heritage Collection in 2007, it was a tough sell. &ldquo;Initially, clients struggled with the notion of purchasing a jewel that was not new,&rdquo; recalls Van Cleef International Retail Heritage Director Natacha Vassiltchikov, noting that collectors now embrace their elegance and craftsmanship.
Interior designer Colette van den Thillart fell in love with a 19th-century micro-mosaic ring at Alessandra Di Castro&rsquo;s booth. &ldquo;Vintage is the best way to achieve an air of originality,&rdquo; she says.
