With just a month to go, festival leadership has just announced the first wave of films to be showcased.&nbsp;

It's that time of year again: all of our favorite directors, actors, and filmmakers are returning to the French Riviera for the 2026 Cannes Film Festival. The festival is slated to run from May 12 to May 23, where dozens of films will debut.&nbsp;
In recent years, the Cannes Film Festival has presented several major Hollywood productions, but this time around, the lineup features primarily international and indie movies.&nbsp;&nbsp;
&ldquo;Cinema is going through a period of great fragility amid the crisis in theatrical exhibition, the changing behavior of new generations of audiences, the ubiquity of other screens, the merger of U.S. studios, piracy, and artificial intelligence &mdash; which can be another form of piracy &mdash; and so on,&rdquo; Thierry Fr&eacute;maux, Cannes director, told Variety ahead of the lineup announcement.&nbsp;
Despite the challenges the film industry is facing, Fr&eacute;maux remains optimistic ahead of the 2026 Cannes Film Festival. &ldquo;We&rsquo;ve been seeing films that make us happy... Cinema is in a state of constant creativity and renewal,&rdquo; he added.
