Fans think the series finale could lead to an extension of the&nbsp;Stranger Things&nbsp;universe.&nbsp;

Since it was first released in 2016, Stranger Things&nbsp;has been a source of delightful&mdash;yet undeniably bizarre&mdash;entertainment, so when the series finale aired on New Year's Eve, longtime fans said a heartfelt goodbye to their favorite characters&mdash;many of whom have shaped pop culture and Internet humor for nearly a decade.&nbsp;
The show's creators, Matt and Ross Duffer, have confirmed that the storylines of the <a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/film-tv/stranger-things-cast-then-and-now-young-photos-millie-bobby-brown-finn-wolfhard-last-episode-premiere-time-volume-3-season-5" target="_blank" rel="noopener">main characters</a> were completely wrapped up with the series finale.&nbsp;
&ldquo;This is a complete story. It&rsquo;s&nbsp;done," Matt told&nbsp;<a href="https://variety.com/2025/tv/features/stranger-things-5-duffer-bros-ending-spinoffs-1236551615/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Variety</a>&nbsp;in 2025.&nbsp;
Though the pair were adamant that the main narrative was complete with Season 5, they did hint at a potential spin-off in the works that will focus more on the Mind Flayer and the supernatural elements of the show.&nbsp;
"It&rsquo;s a completely different mythology. So it&rsquo;s not a deep exploration of the Mind Flayer or anything like that. It&rsquo;s very fresh and very new, but yes, it will answer some of the loose threads that are remaining," Matt explained to&nbsp;<a href="https://variety.com/2026/tv/news/stranger-things-finale-is-eleven-alive-vecna-killed-rock-spinoff-1236621528/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Variety</a>&nbsp;earlier in 2026.&nbsp;
A release date, cast, or further plot explanation has yet to be revealed, but as fans of the series know, a spin-off diving into the world of the show's darker forces would be highly anticipated, to say the least. The pair also added that none of the "common characters" from the original series would be featured in the spin-off, as of now.&nbsp;
News of the spin-off was followed by an announcement for a Netflix documentary series that chronicles the making of&nbsp;<a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/film-tv/what-time-does-stranger-things-season-5-come-out-cast-salaries-millie-bobby-brown-net-worth" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Stranger Things</a>&nbsp;Season 5. The series will release on January 12, 2026, giving fans the opportunity to bid adieu to their favorite characters one final time.&nbsp;&nbsp;
