From his acting inspirations to his off-screen obsessions, the Welsh actor is full of surprises.

Taron Egerton is easy to love. The actor, who hails from Aberystwyth, Wales, is refreshingly humble, shamelessly silly and makes on-screen chemistry look effortless.
Since his breakout role as Eggsy in the Kingsman franchise, Egerton has built a career playing characters as varied as a TSA agent, a firefighter and a psychopath—not to mention an animated gorilla.
At just 36, Egerton has already earned the admiration of some of Hollywood’s biggest names. Charlize Theron, his co-star in the thriller Apex, called him “one of the top-five best actors I’ve ever worked with in my entire life.” Elton John has also remained one of Egerton’s biggest champions since the actor portrayed him in Rocketman. The two have even performed together onstage. Egerton has a deep appreciation for fellow actors and artists, although he’s hesitant to call himself the latter. In 2019, Egerton told Pitchfork that David Bowie has “always been one of my heroes.” His acting inspirations include Gary Oldman and Anthony Hopkins. Hopkins even gave Egerton advice on playing a villain—imagine getting villain tips from Hannibal Lecter himself.
But there’s more to Egerton than his on-screen transformations. He’s a Scorpio, collects Moscot sunglasses and loves the Katz’s Delicatessen Reuben. From his candle obsession to his very particular Christmas condiment preferences, here are six more things to know about Taron Egerton.

Egerton may not be a materialist, but he does have a weakness for a good candle. He even confessed to having just bought one before an interview with Kelly Clarkson. Among his favorites is Diptyque's Feu de Bois, though we're still eagerly awaiting a definitive ranking of his collection.

Growing up in Wales gave Egerton his charming Welsh accent, but you’d never know it from watching most of his films. Surprisingly, one of his biggest challenges was mastering an English accent. When performing an accent closer to home, there’s less room for error: a British audience, he feared, would be quick to spot a slip that American viewers might miss. His Australian and American accents, meanwhile, are next-to-native.

Besides the occasional selfie or dancing video, Egerton keeps a relatively low profile on Instagram. In a candid post in 2023, he described feeling troubled by scrolling and wanting to be more present, a familiar struggle for many. Only recently, however, has he begun sharing more of his playful side on social media. In May, following the release of Apex, he posted videos of himself dancing and thanking fans for their support. On Dax Shepard’s podcast Armchair Expert, he reflected on shedding the aloof leading-man persona Hollywood often expects of its actors. “I like my weirdness. I like my shadow,” he said. On behalf of the Internet, we need more.

It may seem obvious, given that two of his best-known roles are Johnny in Sing and Elton John in Rocketman. But Egerton’s love of singing predates his Hollywood career. He sang in choirs growing up in Wales, a country so devoted to singing that it’s nicknamed “the Land of Song.” When auditioning for the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, where he would go on to study, he performed a cover of Elton John’s “Your Song.” And his personal taste is diverse. He grew up listening to David Bowie, winds down to Kaytranada or Nick Drake before bed, and is also a fan of Anderson .Paak.

Elton John Still Calls Him "Blodwyn"

One of the highest honors Sir Elton John can bestow upon a friend is a drag alter ego. The tradition dates back to the 1970s, when the singer began giving his inner circle feminine nicknames, including “Carol Dakota” for John Lennon, a reference to his famous New York apartment building. Egerton’s moniker is “Blodwyn,” a feminine Welsh name. Sometimes, he gets the extended version: “Blodwyn Campervan,” a nod to his love of camping and motorhomes.
