This year's film lineup hosts a handful of timely themes, veteran names, and long-awaited returns.

Venice has always existed at the intersection of cinema and spectacle. As the world's oldest film festival, it's almost expected.&nbsp;
In September 2026, the Lido will once again transform into a gilded corridor of legacy auteurs, cinephiles, high-gloss premieres, and carefully choreographed arrivals. This year's lineup hosts a handful of veteran names and long-awaited returns that already sound like award-earners.
The festival begins with Danny Boyle's Netflix-acquired&nbsp;Ink, a biographical drama set in the world of Rupert Murdoch's media empire. The film is based on the Tony-nominated play by screenwriter James Graham. Starring <a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/film-tv/jack-oconnell-lady-chatterleys-lover-netflix-film">Jack O'Connell</a>, Guy Pearce, and Claire Foy, it's a sharply timed opener that seems to set the tone for a theme of influence. From there, the parade of filmmakers and talent includes Martin McDonagh, returning with Wild Horse Nine, a crime comedy that stars John Malkovich, Sam Rockwell, and Steve Buscemi as CIA agents on a mission.&nbsp;
McDonagh has a history of turning Venice into a personal runway of sorts. With notable and earlier premieres such as Three Billboards Outside of Ebbing, Missouri and The Banshees of Inisherin, he's earned a reputation for meshing themes of dark crimes and justice with comedy perfectly.
Lance Oppenheim, best known for HBO series Ren Faire, is bringing his new A24 film Primetime to Venice. The film features Robert Pattinson as journalist Chris Hansen, who changed the social media and television landscape through his set and trap methods for catching criminals.&nbsp;
Another major attraction stars Penélope Cruz alongside her husband and longtime on-screen companion, Javier Bardem, in a psychological thriller called&nbsp;Bunker. The cast includes Paul Dano, Stephen Graham, and Patrick Schwarzenegger under the direction of Florian Zeller.&nbsp;
Zeller has shown a knack for intimate thrillers and emotional pressure-cookers. Here he takes that instinct into a psychologically charged portrait of a marriage strained by a billionaire's bunker project. Another timely story that's both high-glamour and faintly doomed.&nbsp;

Possible Love 2026

The international art-house crowd will have plenty to talk about as well. With Lee Chang-dong returning after an eight-year hiatus with Possible Love, a Netflix-supported adaptation and drama about the lives of two married couples intertwining.&nbsp; The significant comeback for one of contemporary cinema's post admired filmmakers includes notable stars Sul Kyung-gu, Zo In-sung, Jeon Do-yeon, and Cho Yeo-jeong.&nbsp;

Despite the global reach of the festival, a familiar imbalance remains. May El-Toukhy's&nbsp;Woman Unknown stands out as the only female-directed film in the competition. The World War II drama tells the story of a nanny whose romantic past threatens to ruin her future. The director's previous Sundance Award for Queen of Hearts sets the tone for her well-received affinity for exploring romantic relationships.&nbsp;
As always, <a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/art/venice-biennale-2026-fashion-exhibitions-projects-initiatives">Venice</a> makes room to support hometown artistry. Nanni Moretti returns with rom-com It Will Happen Tonight, starring Louis Garrel and Jasmine Trinca. Edoardo De Angelis will show Il Fuoco Che Ti Porti Dentro, and Andrea Pallaoro will debut The Echo Chamber, starring Alicia Vikander, Lucia Marinelli, and Susan Sarandon.
Broader sections of the festival's lineup are similarly stacked and highly anticipated with Paul Schrader's The Basics of Philosophy to Kornél Mundruczó’s Place to Be, featuring Pamela Anderson, Taika Waititi, and Ellen Burstyn.&nbsp;
