At a time when fashion shows often seem designed to survive ten seconds on TikTok rather than several years in a wardrobe,&nbsp;Michael Rider chooses a different path. A path that is almost radical in its obviousness: letting clothes live. For his fourth collection for Celine—and the first entirely dedicated to menswear—the American artistic director is not looking for a flashy spectacle or a concept intended to fill an endless press release. He is interested in what truly matters: the intimate relationship between a man and his clothes.The result is a collection that speaks less of fashion than of style. On the catwalk, the silhouettes are nothing like those figures frozen by an overly perfect aesthetic. They evoke instead men one might encounter on the Paris metro or on a street corner in Saint-Germain-des-Prés: different personalities, singular temperaments, united by a shared sartorial sensibility. Rider doesn't design a uniform; instead, he composes possibilities.This philosophy permeates the entire collection. Generously proportioned trousers transition effortlessly from a bike ride on Rue Saint-Honoré to a lively dinner in Place Saint-Michel. A jabot-fronted shirt, almost operatic in its elegance, is worn with the casualness of a simple T-shirt. A jacket with sculpted shoulders, fastened with a giant safety pin, covers a cotton tank top. A deliberately worn trench coat appears to have been its owner's constant companion for years, more like a trusted friend than a newly acquired object of desire.In an industry obsessed with novelty, the designer performs a far more precious act: he creates clothes that immediately give the feeling of having always belonged to the wearer.

The task was far from easy. Succeeding Phoebe Philo and then Hedi Slimane meant taking the reins of a house shaped by two profoundly different visions. From Philo, with whom he worked, Rider retained an understanding of eclecticism and the conviction that clothing should serve the individual before serving an image. From Slimane, he inherited a love of subcultures, music, and a certain rock nonchalance. But he never tries to arbitrate between these two legacies. He constructs a personal language where French elegance meets a classic American ease.The pleasure of the show lies precisely in this freedom of combination. A turquoise satin cummerbund cinches a flowing beach tunic. An antique brooch, seemingly found at a flea market, finds its natural place on a turtleneck. The artistic director invites us less to consume than to look differently at what we already own. No one has exactly the same combination of clothing and accessories. Our wardrobe is our DNA; our way of dressing, our signature.This season, he also continues his project to rehabilitate white jeans, pairing them with ballet flats, loose-fitting shirts, ethnic-inspired pearl necklaces, or lightweight pea coats. Here again, the classic defies all predictability. Rider's gestures never appear calculated. They resemble a way of dressing more than a demonstration of style. His silhouettes seem composed of pieces accumulated over the years, unearthed at a flea market, inherited from a relative, or brought back from a trip. This is undoubtedly what makes them so believable.

In this wardrobe, the return of slim-fit trousers also fits in naturally. Seen this season on several menswear runways, they echo the legacy of Hedi Slimane, particularly at Dior Men, while Prada offers an interpretation that extends the elongated and edgy vision developed by Raf Simons in the '90s. Rider participates in this conversation without ever succumbing to nostalgia: for them, the slim silhouette is not an aesthetic statement, but one option among others, integrated into a wardrobe where each man creates his own look.In the audience, one guest perfectly embodied this philosophy. A rare sight in the front row, Grace Jones attended the show wearing a bowler hat from a previous Celine collection. She danced, smiled, and seemed utterly free. Not because she was wearing the most spectacular clothes in the show, but because they seemed to be a natural extension of her personality.Perhaps this is where the success of the new Celine lies. The house is no longer appealing solely to fashion enthusiasts, but to those who already possess a style and don't wait for trends to validate it.
