Portugal’s wild shoreline is summer’s most beguiling destination—and the fashion set is taking notice.

When social media conspires to make every corner of the earth feel overexposed, there are still places that resist the algorithm. Portugal is one of them, a certain Portugal, at least (golf holidays and bachelor trips aside). While Lisbon and Porto have earned their rightful places on the itineraries of the culturati, a quieter, wilder Portugal is coming into view. Along the coastline, from the Jurassic-era limestone cliffs of Arrábida to the Algarve's Ria Formosa, each stretch has its own character, and reason to visit. Below, a roadmap for the discerning traveler.

Conquered and occupied by the Moors, shaped by the Age of Exploration, and forever marked by the Great Lisbon Earthquake of 1755, Portugal's capital city has been experi-encing a cultural renaissance, and is a perfect place to begin. Romantics will lose themselves in Alfama's yellow, green, and blue tiled facades; foodies and social creatures will adore mixing with locals in the bars and restaurants of Principe Real. Wine aficionados should ensconce themselves at the hilltop Palácio Ludovice hotel, in charming Bairro Alto. Art devotees will want to try MACAM, a hotel within a new contemporary art museum in Belém. After 48 hours in the city, it's time to hit the road.
Forty minutes south, the Arrábida region is poised to become one of Portugal's most sought-after destinations. Recently named a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, the Natural Park&nbsp;of Arrábida boasts 25,000 acres of protected cliffs, beaches, and singular flora and fauna. Taking its name from the Arabic word for place of prayer, the region is rich in history and culture, with Moorish castles, museums, and the famous Mercado do Livramento a vast fish market adorned in blue and white tiles nearby. Stay at the 17th-century Hotel Casa Palmela, the only five-star resort, and explore the area on horseback.
South of the Sado River Estuary is the Tróia Peninsula, home to stone pine forests, rice fields, and Comporta. Somewhere along the way, a well-meaning publicist saddled Comporta with the moniker "The Hamptons of Portugal." What they presumably meant was the Hamptons of Pollock, Krasner, and de Kooning, since artists like Anselm Kiefer, designer Jacques Grange, and architect Philippe Starck were the first to descend upon Comporta's sleepy shores.

Unhurried yet stylish, Comporta is a delight. The sand alone is worth the trip: Weightless but velvety underfoot, it somehow feels expensive. While there are a handful of excellent resorts to choose from, and more on the way (Sublime Sand and a Six Senses are new for 2026), there's something easy about staying in town at AlmaLusa. Pick up snacks at Mercearia Gomes or the local fruit stand and while away the day at JNcQUOI or Sublime Beach Club. Start the evening at Colmo Bar for al fresco cocktails before heading to Michelin-recommended Cavalariça, a former horse stable—turned—intimate dining room, where the food is unpretentious and exceptional.
Those looking to get away from it all should not sleep on Costa Vicentina, Portugal's untamed southwest coastline. The heart of Portugal's surf culture, it's a place where open-top Jeeps&nbsp;routinely rattle down dirt trails, surfboards peeking out the back. Building restrictions have kept the coastline wonderfully undeveloped, with the landscape alternating between long stretches of sandy beach and coves framed by dramatic cliffs. Visitors to this stretch should choose Amaria, a serene resort that pairs minimalist architecture with its rugged surroundings: A chic setting to rest your head after a scenic hike.

While the western Algarve boasts a stunning coastline, miles of trails, and a few select luxury properties (like the iconic Bela Vista in Portimão and Masana Algarve, a new Destination by Hyatt resort in Olhos de Água), it is the eastern Algarve, from Faro to the Spanish border, where the locals play. Cliffs give way to beaches, maritime pine forests, and the Ria Formosa a sprawling ecosystem of salt marshes, canals, and barrier islands. Fishing boats still return at dawn and markets are stocked with local produce. While you won't find many boutique hotels here (in much of the Algarve, one books a villa or owns a townhouse in a village-style resort), a stay at Verdelago is the way to go. With a gym, yoga studio, padel and tennis courts, spa and indoor pool, Verdelago is a short drive from the quaint medieval town of Tavira as well as Praia Verde, offering something for everyone you travel with.
Portugal, it turns out, rewards those who go farther. Go now, before the algorithm catches up.
