The Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) announced that on November 2nd during their 2019 Art+Film Gala, they will be honoring artist Betye Saar and Alfonso Cuarón in an event sponsored by Gucci. Since 2011, LACMA trustees Eva Chow and Leonardo DiCaprio have encouraged the museum’s forays into the film world, placing a greater emphasis on the medium in the museum’s curatorial practices.

“This gala is a moment to honor the achievements of the moving image and to celebrate the strengthened dialogue between art and film in Los Angeles,” LACMA CEO and Wallis Annenberg Director Michael Govan said. “This creative exchange will continue to grow stronger in the coming years with the opening of the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures and LACMA’s theater in its new building for the permanent collection. These exciting new cultural developments will ensure that the legacy of cinema will continue to thrive in Los Angeles.”

Betye Saar is a visual artist known for her role establishing the Assemblage style of the 1960s, as well as her depictions of the African American experience, spirituality, gender, and cultural intersectionality. A California native, Saar’s work reflects American cultural and racial tropes with a critical eye, retooling Black stereotypes into self-identification. This fall, LACMA will be showcasing Saar’s personal sketchbooks in the exhibit Betye Saar: Call and Response.

Alfonso Cuarón is an Oscar-winning filmmaker known for works like Gravity (2013) and his most recent film, Roma (2018), which won Academy Awards for directing and cinematography, as well as the award for Best Foreign Language. LACMA exhibited stills from the picture earlier this year, resonating especially with museum-goers of Mexican and Latin American descent.

“We are very excited to celebrate the life’s work of two extraordinary forces in the visual arts: Betye Saar and Alfonso Cuarón,” said Gala Co-Chair Eva Chow. “Together with the generous support of our partner Gucci, we are able to shine a light on their contributions in their respective fields that inspire future generations of artists and filmmakers.”
