Sunscreens are irritating. It&rsquo;s no secret. Many people tolerate it in the name of skin health. I, for one, use my darker skin tone as an excuse to skip it; the only time I&rsquo;ll put up with sunscreen is on particularly scorching, high-UV days at the beach. Otherwise, it&rsquo;s an afterthought.&nbsp;
Still, it&rsquo;s troubling to see so many people struggling to find a good sunscreen that works under makeup. If you&rsquo;ve ever traveled to Europe or Asia and found their sunscreens much more advanced than the ones in the U.S., you&rsquo;re not just imagining it: the FDA&rsquo;s outdated, strict regulations classify sunscreen as an over-the-counter drug. First things first, let&rsquo;s address some lesser-known facts about sunscreen (these are important to know when choosing the right one for you). There are two main types of sunscreen: chemical and mineral. You&rsquo;ve probably seen those labels on bottles you&rsquo;ve considered and maybe even ignored them.&nbsp;&nbsp;
Chemical sunscreens are generally lighter, transparent, and work by triggering a chemical reaction that prevents UV damage, <a href="https://health.clevelandclinic.org/mineral-vs-chemical-sunscreen" target="_blank" rel="noopener">per the Cleveland Clinic</a>. In other words, they&rsquo;re usually more comfortable for daily use outside of heavy sun activities&mdash;perfect for everything except long days at the beach or outdoor sports.&nbsp;
Mineral sunscreens, on the other hand, have thicker, heavier textures and are typically opaque. They&rsquo;re less ideal under makeup. Then there&rsquo;s another even lesser-known distinction when it comes to sunscreen: broad spectrum and UVA/UVB.&nbsp;
UVA/UVB sunscreens protect your skin from specific rays. Meanwhile, broad spectrum sunscreens protect against both UVA and UVB rays, making them the most well-rounded option in terms of overall protection. The drawback, however, is that, because many of them are mineral sunscreens, they tend to leave a white cast or feel heavy and greasy.

Keeping it simple: Shiseido&rsquo;s sunscreen stick is a classic for a reason. Truth be told, I never paid much attention to it despite friends constantly recommending it&mdash;and I wish I had sooner. It&rsquo;s by far the most undetectable formula of all the sunscreens I&rsquo;ve tried: weightless, invisible, and incredibly quick to apply, thanks to its stick format (read: the ultimate on-the-go sunscreen).
The Shiseido Clear Sunscreen Stick has a semi-matte finish, so it works best for normal to oily skin, but even those with dry skin like mine can appreciate how it doesn&rsquo;t add extra heaviness to your base before makeup. Compared to other velvety SPFs for oily skin, like Glossier and Supergoop, it doesn&rsquo;t deliver that ultra-mattifying, pore-filling primer effect&mdash;but that&rsquo;s also what makes it feel lighter and more natural.
You do have to use a slightly heavier hand when applying, since it&rsquo;s not the kind of stick that glides on super easily. Still, it&rsquo;s not one you have to drag across your face.

While Dr. Jart offers a wide range of sunscreens, the Every Day Sun Fluid is by far the most versatile. It&rsquo;s hydrating enough for fall but still lightweight and breathable for stickier, more humid months. Of all the sunscreens I&rsquo;ve tested, this easily makes my top three: it absorbs quickly, leaves a subtle radiance, and feels deeply moisturizing.
Those with normal and combination skin will get the most out of it, but even my dry skin drank it up when I applied a generous layer. Because it&rsquo;s lightweight yet nourishing, oily skin types could also use it in place of a water or gel moisturizer&mdash;though applied more sparingly, since it&rsquo;s not a mattifying option.
Like most SPFs, it does have a faint citrusy sunscreen scent, which comes from the combination of chemical UV filters and inactive ingredients like zinc oxide. But it doesn&rsquo;t linger, so I pretty much tolerate it.

It has a very velvety texture reminiscent of pore-refining primers and leaves a mattifying yet breathable finish. That said, it&rsquo;s most suitable for oily skin, though it&rsquo;s lightweight enough to work well for normal and combination skin. (In case you missed it: this is a reformulated version of the original sunscreen, which used to have a more gel-like consistency). My only qualm is that, while fragrance-free, it still carries a hint of that infamous sunscreen scent that lingers longer than you&rsquo;d like. If you&rsquo;re looking for an SPF face spray, on the other hand, Isle of Paradise&rsquo;s mist is a great option for oily skin. It goes on transparent and, while it initially leaves a wet look (as most mists and setting sprays do), it absorbs quickly, feels lightweight, and doesn&rsquo;t add extra dew nor matte to your finish.
What I love most about the Isle of Paradise SPF 50 Face Mist is that it skips the citrusy sunscreen scent. Instead, it has a refreshing coconut fragrance that feels like a mini tropical escape. The only drawback is that you&rsquo;ll want to be mindful around your eyes&mdash;if it gets too close, it stings more than most skincare products. And because of the continuous nozzle spray, it can be tricky to control exactly how much you&rsquo;re applying.
Still, it&rsquo;s a great option for on-the-go touch-ups even for dry skin, since it's designed to be applied over makeup. Just be sure to hold it at a safe distance to avoid any accidental eye contact.

As far as serums go, it&rsquo;s on the thicker side&mdash;a dream for very dry skin, especially as cooler weather brings dryness and windburn. Still, it absorbs well enough to sit comfortably under makeup in the fall (though I would skip on other daytime serums). That said, it&rsquo;s not the most year-round option; come summer, it may feel a little sticky.
While it goes on white, it doesn&rsquo;t leave a cast if you blend it in for 5-10 seconds, at which point it disappears into a dewy, glazed finish. It&rsquo;s also formulated with collagen peptide, which brings added benefits like improving skin tone, texture, and elasticity.

As far as foundations go, it&rsquo;s a very lightweight feel that offers light to medium coverage and leaves a soft, airbrushed finish.
