At Pierpaolo Piccioli's couture debut, the house's most famous It bag—a 2001 icon—was reborn in silver metal and 40,000 crystals.

Couture rarely makes room for a day bag. Clutches, minaudières, the occasional beaded evening pouch—yes; a slouchy, everyday carryall is another matter entirely. At his debut couture collection for <a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/fashion-week/balenciaga-haute-couture-fall-winter-2026-show-runway-photos-models-pierpaolo-piccioli-debut-celebrities-front-row-see-all-the-looks">Balenciaga</a>, Pierpaolo Piccioli decided to change that. Of the entire Fall/Winter 2026 couture collection—shown July 8 at the Cité Internationale Universitaire de Paris, amid sculpted cashmere coats and feathered Philip Treacy headpieces—only two looks carried a bag in hand. Both stole the show, because both were the City.
<a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/fashion/pierpaolo-piccioli-balenciaga-archives-cristobal-moda-lofficiel">Piccioli</a> reimagined the house signature—now stamped Le City—in its medium size, the slouchy leather body rebuilt as a shiny silver metal skeleton and, in place of leather, a mesh of rose gold crystal said to number some 40,000 Swarovski stones across the front and back. It walked twice. In look 5, it was styled with an ivory silk-and-wool Mikado T-shirt maxi dress, a single gold-plated feather earring, and elephant-gray suede Siren pumps. In look 21, it returned against a taupe silk-and-wool organza crêpe coat, a fluorescent-green silk turtleneck, and extra-large hazelnut trousers embroidered with curled organza petals. Where couture usually shrinks its bags to jewel-box proportions, Piccioli did the opposite—insisting the everyday can be every bit as precious as the ornamental.&nbsp;

To understand why that gesture lands, you have to go back to 2001. That year, a young Nicolas Ghesquière—only a few years into what would become a 15-year tenure at Balenciaga—introduced a soft, logo-less bag studded, tasseled, and slouched with moto-grunge nonchalance, first called Le Dix Motorcycle Lariat. “Accessories were rigid,” Ghesquière later recalled to <a href="https://wwd.com/fashion-news/designer-luxury/feature/the-balenciaga-factor-5057226-861069/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">WWD</a>. “Luxury leather, especially, was about rigidity.” His bag subverted exactly that, and the house’s executives were unconvinced. Against the era’s status-symbol arm candy, like the Fendi Baguette and the Dior Saddle, its unstructured, pre-worn look read more derelict than designer, and only about 25 prototypes were made.

Then came the twist that fashion lore never tires of telling. Kate Moss reportedly asked Ghesquière for one straight off the runway, and once word spread that the industry’s favorite trendsetter had co-signed it, Balenciaga committed to production. The remaining prototypes went to the most powerful stylists and editors of the time—Carine Roitfeld, Emmanuelle Alt, Marie-Amélie Sauvé—and the bag’s fate was sealed. It launched in three sizes, the First, the City, and the Work, but it was the medium City that became the runway hit, lending its name to the whole line and, soon, to the arms of every early-aughts It girl from <a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/fashion/mary-kate-olsen-wine-stained-balenciaga-city-bag-2000s">Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen</a> to Nicole Richie.

That history is exactly what makes Piccioli’s version more than a novelty. The City was born an anti-status symbol—slouchy, hardware-heavy, deliberately undone—and became an icon precisely because it rejected couture’s polish. In the years since, it has spun off sister silhouettes, from Demna’s 2021 Le Cagole to the 2024 Le City, and vintage originals now resell for well above their first-run prices. To rebuild the shape in metal and crystal and set it inside a couture collection is to close a 25-year loop: the bag once deemed too casual for luxury is now refined enough for the couture salon.
Piccioli’s debut was full of statements—Cristóbal Balenciaga's neo-gazar revived, the bioengineered silk AmSilk introduced to couture, feathers turned structural—but the crystal Le City may be the one that travels furthest, because it speaks the language of desire that made Balenciaga a household name in the first place. There’s no price yet, and there won’t be a resale rack; the couture version is reserved for the house’s VIP clients. Twenty-five years after it was almost never made, the It bag has been reintroduced to itself—this time, by invitation only.&nbsp;
