Karl Lagerfeld’s 2013/14 Chanel Métiers d’Art collection celebrated the American West and honored the Texas city that helped restore Coco Chanel’s reputation decades earlier.&nbsp;

Each is part of the fabric of today’s fashion world, be it barrier breakers or culture makers.In 2013, a handwritten invitation from Chanel’s <a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/fashion/karl-lagerfeld-auctions-estate-archive-with-sothebys-paris-fingerless-gloves-ipods-for-sale" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Karl Lagerfeld</a> hit the mailboxes of editors, socialites, and style obsessives alike, depicting Coco and the simple phrase ‘Coco Chanel Back in Dallas.’&nbsp;This event was a homecoming 56 years in the making, a debt owed to the very place that saved the Chanel name in 1957.&nbsp;That December, Lagerfeld transformed Dallas’s Fair Park into the most glamorous rodeo the fashion world has ever seen, including a drive-in film, vintage cars, a classic western saloon, and 98 looks that incorporated Paris into the folklore of the American West. At a time when fashion’s relationship with Americana was largely decorative, Lagerfeld’s Paris-Dallas collection was a genuine act of tribute from a French house that knew its greatest comeback had been made possible by the southern hospitality of the Lone Star State.&nbsp;The connection to Dallas dates back to 1954, when <a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/fashion/gabrielle-chanel-nickname-coco" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Coco Chanel</a> made her long-awaited comeback after fifteen years of silence, which the French press famously rejected. In 1957, Stanley Marcus of Neiman Marcus brought her to Texas to receive his store’s highest fashion honor. So when Lagerfeld chose Fair Park as the backdrop for his ambitious Métiers d’Art show, it was a grand gesture of thanks.

The evening of December 10th, 2013, was nothing short of a production. Guests arrived at a '50s-style drive-in at Dallas’ Fair Park, where convertibles rolled in, one seating Lagerfeld and Anna Wintour, to join the attendees as they were treated to a premiere of ‘The Return,” a short film written and directed by Lagerfeld, animating the very comeback and Dallas tie that inspired this collection. The after-party honed in on the Wild West ambiance with a Chanel-branded saloon, a mechanical bull, classic Dallas barbecue, and, of course, many, many cowboys sprawled about.&nbsp;

As for the rodeo itself, the walk across the hay-sprinkled runway featured the full terrain of the American West with fringe, denim, feathers, leather, and cowboy boots galore, showing Lagerfeld’s most committed act of Americana yet. The lineup included many of the house’s signature pieces with southern influence, showing classic tweed and brooches alongside Navajo-inspired patterns, wide-brimmed hats, heavy fringe, and western boots. It was the classic Chanel look refitted for the rodeo, perfectly creating a sea of Western reverie that evening.

Paris-Dallas remains one of the most celebrated shows of the Métiers d’Art series, an example of Lagerfeld’s dedication to place and history in addition to clothes.
