Designers turned layering into a game of contrast and texture for Spring/Summer 2026, mixing unexpected shapes and fabrics to create lively, unpredictable outfits.

Layering is having a moment&mdash;and not just on the runway. It&rsquo;s become a way to build multiple, versatile looks from an edited wardrobe, maximizing both self-expression and cost per wear. At Loewe, triple blue, black, and toffee quarter-zips tumbled over tunic-length shirts in brown, green, and light blue. Prada paired sheer black cigaline midi-skirts with suspender straps over colorful poplin boyshorts and piqu&eacute; polos, left open to reveal sculptural bralettes. Meanwhile, Miu Miu orchestrated a carnival of textures: macram&eacute;, poplin, leather, and embellished canvas aprons layered atop bikini tops, Dickies, technical knits, and barn jackets. Each look read like a composite, spliced together from distinct parts, in which the tension between elements was exactly the point.
At N21, Alessandro Dell&rsquo;Acqua made layering an explicit focus, spelling it out in the collection&rsquo;s title: &ldquo;Layering All About Lightness.&rdquo; Look after look returned to sheer slipdresses, endlessly recombined into new, unexpected configurations. The opening exit set the tone: a diaphanous polka dot chiffon slip, slit from underarm to knee, fell over a sheer black chiffon skirt atop brocade shorts, with an embroidered lace bra surfacing at the bust and a sweater looped nonchalantly around the shoulders. Chiffon and steel flower pins added further friction. It was intricate without feeling heavy, a study in transparency and accumulation. &ldquo;The decision to create an entire collection dedicated to layering stems from a need for irreverence," Dell&rsquo;Acqua says. &ldquo;I believe this historical moment requires particular attention to the product, in its essentiality. We can say that we have invented everything, perhaps even too much: it is time to reflect, rediscover, and rework.&rdquo;
If newness in silhouette or fabrication is, as Dell&rsquo;Acqua suggests, no longer the point, then the creative act shifts to styling. That emphasis on clever, expressive layering echoes wider consumer trends. &ldquo;We are definitely seeing a rise in more eccentric, eclectic layering for Spring/Summer 2026: expressive, highly individual looks that combine varied garments, textural play, and bold color," says WGSN trend forecaster Mia Jacobs, noting that younger consumers are actively driving the trend by prioritizing self-expression over uniformity. &ldquo;Embracing imperfection and experimentation, in direct contrast to the highly curated, polished aesthetic of quiet luxury, is central to this approach.&rdquo; Jacobs points out that madcap layering encourages a &ldquo;renewed emphasis on personal style,&rdquo; allowing wearers to build multiple, versatile looks from a considered wardrobe&mdash;a flexibility that feels particularly relevant in today&rsquo;s challenging economic climate.

Lisbon-based influencer Vicky Montanari, who has over a million followers, turns her home-renovation check-ins into impromptu runway shows. In her lightly satiric GRWM videos&mdash;partstyling-versus-wearing tutorial, part street-style performance art&mdash;she gets dressed outside, breaking into song and dance while offering witty commentary about combining pieces in ways that feel spontaneous and personal. &ldquo;Layering everyday outfits is a bit like cooking a lasagna; you can&rsquo;t have too many layers," Montanari explains. &ldquo;The key is to stack pieces you&rsquo;d normally wear on their own, combining them so the underlayers remain visible." Demonstrating the principle with the season&rsquo;s must-have MiuMiu apron, she suggests layering wardrobe staples such as tailored trousers, a striped shirt, and a gilet underneath. &ldquo;I love the idea of sleeves and collars peeking out from under the apron, and I really enjoy the contrast of wearing an apron over more office looks,&rdquo; she says.
Like Montanari, fashion director Chloe King namechecks Miu Miu as a standout layering example on the Spring/Summer 2026 runways. &ldquo;Miu Miu felt fresh because the daintier pieces, like a lace apron, were worn over a bulky work jacket,&rdquo; King says. Never one to shy away from stripes, florals, or clashing colors, King treats dressing as a playful experiment and enjoys turning traditional layering rules upside down. &ldquo;I think it&rsquo;s fun to challenge how you would normally layer&mdash;typically starting with smaller items like a bra or tank, then larger pieces like a sweater or coat&mdash;and flip it on its head,&rdquo; she says. &ldquo;At Prada, for instance, a draped lace neglig&eacute;e was the final layer over a burgundy knit.&rdquo; By stacking layers in unexpected ways, she notes, you can maximize texture, color, and visual interest without adding bulk. Lightweight top layers such as lace, chiffon, and silks are a great place to start. &ldquo;And for extra-easy layering Loewe has some super clever pre-styled pieces, like fabulous millefeuille shirts,&rdquo; King adds.

Indeed, magpie layering doesn&rsquo;t have to be complicated or intimidating. &ldquo;Just pull things out of your closet and try new combinations,&rdquo; advises Henry Zankov, whose runway debut layered a beaded mesh skirt over a peony tunic and tomato skirt, both in silk, along with a multi-stripe tank, polo, and crewneck teamed with a metallic checkerboard skirt. "If you have a pair of plaid pants, put them on with something completely different than you normally would. Just walk away from the black.&rdquo; 
Meanwhile, at Lii, Zane Li shows how you can do a lot with very little, drawing on the geometric minimalism of sculptors Donald Judd and Walter De Maria to build sculptural volumes. Li&rsquo;s layering relies on color-blocked basics&mdash;pinnies, muscle tees, and short and long-sleeve T-shirts&mdash;cut from vintage menswear cotton jersey. &ldquo;You can create interesting new curvatures from layering simple pieces that hold their shape,&rdquo; Li explains.
At Alainpaul, former ballet dancer Alain Paul approached layering from a more restrained angle. His runway show, staged as a mock audition with clipboards for guest &ldquo;judges,&rdquo; explored how much can be done within a neutral palette. Slip dresses were folded down and worn as skirts, tights repurposed or rolled, and bodysuits styled as bandeau tops with fastenings left loose and trailing.
&nbsp;&ldquo;That instinct of layering, peeling off, and pulling on garments between rehearsals and auditions informed not just the looks but the rhythm of the whole show,&rdquo; Paul says. "I wanted the runway styling to feel like those in-between moments, garments that are in process, not finished, because that's what dressing feels like in real life, especially for a dancer. We are always negotiating breath, balance, and readiness.&rdquo;
