A dark glossy perm. Long acrylic nails. The latest Chanel tweed jacket. If you don't recognize these key details, then you must not know the legend that is <a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/tags/marc-jacobs">Marc Jacobs</a>. From his recent <a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/fashion/marc-jacobs-spring-summer-2027-collection-runway-photos-see-all-the-looks-review">Spring/Summer 2027</a> collection spotlighting gratitude to the recent relaunch of Marc Jacobs Beauty, the American fashion designer has kept himself busy amidst the LVMH sale of his eponymous brand to WHP Global and G-III Apparel Group, first announced in May.
"There's no yes or no," Jacobs said to <a href="https://www.vanityfair.com/story/marc-jacobs-cover-story?srsltid=AfmBOoo5pSrgrBMR2xg6zalT6Iw_bp4Z2AmZAsX2Ugks6Uq6a5gcLBac">Vanity Fair</a> regarding the future of the brand. "It could be this, it could be that. Where am I now? Where are we now? What do we mean to this generation of people? That generation of people? There's so many questions." There's a clear answer to these inquiries: Marc Jacobs means a whole lot to a lot of fashion lovers that span a multitude of generations, and it shouldn't go unnoticed.
Before Jacobs sent models down the runway dressed in bold ensembles for various houses, the New York-born talent was making waves in the city for toeing the line at <a href="https://lofficielusa.com/tags/perry-ellis">Perry Ellis</a>. The decision to send looks with beanies and chokers down the runway in November 1992 is part of what got him fired shortly after. This chapter in the fashion designer's career not only offers a lesson for any creative looking to make an impact in their industry, but also emphasizes the importance of taking risks to go to the next level.
Popular in the 1980s for its traditional men's attire and loose-silhouetted women's clothing, Perry Ellis hired a young Jacobs in 1988, two years after designer Perry Ellis passed away. The late founder's designs felt like something someone would wear in a country club, but when a young Jacobs entered the brand with his own vision, things were bound to shift. That's exactly what happened when Jacobs designed and eventually showed the Spring/Summer 1993 collection.
The 1990s grunge music scene in Seattle was an aesthetic that was embraced by those in rock and roll. On the contrary, it was, at the time, considered a faux pas in high fashion spaces. So, when all-black ensembles, colorful granny dresses, and striped pieces walked down Perry Ellis' elegant showroom during <a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/fashion/new-york-fashion-week-schedule-spring-summer-2027-cfda-calendar">New York Fashion Week</a>, the now-groundbreaking collection was heavily despised by the brand.
Although the show had star power from models like Naomi Campbell, Carla Burni, and Christy Turlington, the collection didn't sell, and much of the press seemed to abhor it. Fashion critic Bernadine Morris wrote in her 1992&nbsp;<a href="https://www.nytimes.com/1992/11/04/garden/review-fashion-beene-s-question-how-does-it-move.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">New York Times</a> review that a typical ensemble in the collection "looks as if it were put together with the eyes closed in a very dark room." Needless to say, the fashion crowd wasn't pleased.

While critics may have had mixed feelings about the collection, it did successfully represent a great chunk of youth culture and what people were actually wearing on the street. In a <a href="https://archive.vogue.com/article/2024/12/mondays-with-marc" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Vogue</a>&nbsp;essay, <a href="https://lofficielusa.com/tags/kate-moss">Kate Moss</a> reflected on her relationship with Jacobs and how authentic his work felt.&nbsp;"In London we had our own version of grunge that my friends and I were all wearing, so when I saw the collection I wasn't shocked," the British supermodel said. "It was more like relief. Like, Someone else gets it."
A deep dive into the collection itself unveils plenty of plaids, Dr. Martens boots, and disheveled hair (none of which appealed to fashion elites' trends of the 1980s). Though not critically acclaimed at the time, this collection and show remain important to know in Jacobs' and in broader American fashion history. It was a bridge between over-the-top collections of the '80s and the minimalistic nature of the '90s.
Ever since then, Jacobs has been celebrated and accomplished much in his decades-long fashion career, including serving as the creative director of womenswear at Louis Vuitton. In today's world, he continues to push limits in fashion, beauty, and the occasional editorial endeavors. The Perry Ellis Spring/Summer 1993 show is a lesson for young designers to create art that aims to spark questions and conversation, versus creating for the sake of merely pleasing.
While reflecting on what the future holds for him, Jacobs knew the power that the collection held and still holds in his career. "That show and that time was the most indicative of feeling part of a greater creative wave that represented a change," the 63-year-old said. "I don't think anything will ever top that."
