The designer brings her seaside aesthetic to a sun-drenched Upper East Side penthouse.

When jewelry designer Sara Beltrán stepped into the penthouse of a Beaux-Arts–style mansion on Madison Avenue, she knew instantly it was the right fit. The showroom itself is intimate, but the sun-drenched terrace sealed the decision. For a designer whose work is rooted in the rhythms of the sea, light is essential. “I’m all about sun, nature, and karma,” she says. The space, in other words, felt perfectly aligned.
By April, the terrace had become a talismanic introduction to the world of Dezso (derived from the Latin word for desire). Large shells are arranged, sculpture-like, while a pair of Chinese Foo Dogs—positioned facing outward, on the advice of Beltrán’s Feng Shui consultant—ward off negative energy. Nearby, six-foot carved bone tusks rise like relics from another time and place. The setting feels less like a showroom than a curated sanctuary, equal parts ritual and reverie.
Inside, a cozy gallery continues the narrative. Jewelry is displayed on shells and stones, as though each piece had washed ashore with the tide. While the designs evoke the ease of the seashore, they are anything but casual. Each piece is meticulously constructed: carved gemstones and natural shells are set with diamonds, and gems are mounted in her signature blend of 18k rose gold. The effect is both exacting and organic, a balance Beltrán has spent two decades refining.
Born in El Paso and raised in Mexico, Beltrán developed an early obsession with the ocean. The act of gathering shells, which started as a childhood pastime, evolved into a lifelong practice of collecting that informs Beltrán’s jewelry and interiors. That deep connection to the sea is central to her work, says her close friend David Rees of the jewelry brand Ten Thousand Things. “The jewelry is coming from a very personal place,” he says. “She loves shells, the sea, and the sunset, and she’s her own muse.”

Whether on her annual trip to Capri or along the coasts of Mexico, Southeast Asia, and the Hamptons, Beltrán is always searching for shells, materials, and inspiration. In Costa Rica, she discovered coquito nuts—tiny coconut-like shells—and set them with glowing polki diamonds, an ancient Indian cut that resembles a softly tumbled stone. In Italy, she sources antique coral, pairing it with vibrant gemstones in pendants and earrings. In Southeast Asia, she came across carved Chinese bone collars and reimagined them with contemporary set diamonds.
“I never think about the value of material when I’m designing,” Beltrán says. “I give the same importance to natural shells as diamonds.” What matters to her is the purity of color, texture, and form. The result is a collection that spans a wide range, from $500 shell pendant necklaces to six-figure gold and diamond cuffs.
These days, Beltrán divides her time between Miami and New York, with extended stays in Jaipur, where she has cultivated longstanding relationships with jewelry artisans. Her recent move to the Upper East Side marks a turning point. Her former Tribeca showroom, she admits, was “dark and moody”—one client likened it to an opium den. But as her business has grown, and with it, a devoted, almost cultlike following, she felt ready for something brighter and more open. “I was ready for a change,” she says.

That evolution traces back to Beltrán’s early years as a stylist, when she first envisioned creating ocean-inspired jewelry. It wasn’t until she moved to Jaipur for three years, however, that her vision fully crystallized. There, she began collaborating with artisans to carve stones into forms that echo marine life—cowrie shells, coral branches, fluid organic shapes. Two decades on, she still works with many of the same artisan families, now with the next generation. Together, they have developed a distinctive language: crystal cowrie shells with diamonds, and luminescent carved moonstone seashells suspended from emerald-cut diamond earrings.
Beyond shells, Beltrán cultivated another signature look: bold, high-polished gold pieces accented with graphic black-enamel shark-fin shapes. The pattern appears across cuffs, rings, and even her home décor objects. “My mark is the shark fin,” she says. “But I made it contemporary in black enamel.” It is a striking counterpoint to the softness of her oceanic forms, adding structure and modernity.

Her aesthetic resists easy categorization. There is the influence of the ocean, certainly, but also the symmetry of Art Deco, and subtle references to Indian design traditions. The result is a line that feels at once playful and sophisticated, sensual yet refined. “It’s strong, sexy, and elegant,” she says, “but also feminine and light.”
That sense of lightness—both literal and emotional—permeates her new showroom. Sun pours across the terrace and into the gallery, catching on polished gold and iridescent shells. Each piece tells a story of travel, discovery, objects found and reimagined. And at the center of it all is Beltrán herself, still collecting, still searching, still guided by the rhythm of the sea.
