It seems like every time summer comes around, there's a (seemingly) brand-new swim trend to contend with. This season, swim shorts are one of the season's most coveted pieces. Although they are often associated with settings like the pool and beach, the garment has stepped out of the water and into many rotations of fashion lovers and anti-denim wearers alike.
Even before the modern-day It girls had the opportunity to wear distinct designs, women's swimwear used to be full of clothing that covered much of the body. Referred to as "bathing gowns," the long, woolen dress hid the curves of many 1800s women, especially since the pieces were made to flow away from the body.
The style would be the norm for some time before French designer Louis Réard introduced the bikini to the swimwear space. At the time, the piece caused a lot of controversy for its then-drastic reveal of the wearer's skin. Thankfully, stars like Rita Hayworth and Marilyn Monroe popularized swim shorts while nylon became the norm for all water-related garments.

In today's world, swim shorts arrive in different lengths, colorways, and distinct patterns that are viewed as "accent pieces" to one's outfit. Long sleeves, blazers, and other preppy-esque clothes were paired with the board shorts, truly redefining how the garment can be worn beyond breezy environments.
For its Spring/Summer 2024 collection, Miu Miu explored the diverse meaning of beauty during the complex and ever-changing era we are still living in. Throughout the 62-look presentation, swim essentials like briefs and shorts were the defining offerings of the season, which had a hold on many.
Even though people continued to wear swim shorts during the summer, Julian Klausner wanted to celebrate the hot season for the Dries Van Noten Spring/Summer 2026 show. "A celebration of summer and the primal energy of a ray of sun," said the creative director. "The tranquility of the simple things."&nbsp;
Sure, pieces like sheer dresses, striped skirts, and bold spiral and polka-dot shirts were great additions to the collection. Yet, a variety of swim shorts reignited the spark that was implementing the piece into one's revolving sequence.

While this summer has brought record-high temperatures to many locations globally, the nylon short has become the fashion It girl's best friend. Surfer-bro-approved board styles, low mid-rise silhouettes, and matching two-piece sets are a part of the wave swim shorts are currently riding in on.
Depending on what look you are trying to achieve, swim shorts can easily mould into an ensemble, on and off the sandy beaches. Wanting to get a full tan across your legs while embracing the cool winds? A boy short style paired with sunglasses, a matching bikini top, a breathable shirt, flip-flops, and a pop of gold jewelry will evoke a lovely sensation anywhere you go.
Feeling an outfit that can effortlessly transition between day-and-night? Try a colorful pattern that will stand out alongside surf-ready hair, a minimalist colorway top, and thong-style sandals. In whatever place you may be, the swim short is more multifaceted than you think. Just make sure to apply lots of sunscreen.
