More than a decade after her death in 2009, Brittany Murphy will serve as the subject of a new HBO docuseries directed by Cynthia Hill. According to Deadline, the project will dive into the Clueless actress's rising career as a young Hollywood starlet and investigate the circumstances surrounding her untimely passing. To get a better sense of Murphy as she was off-screen, the documentary will include never-before-seen footage and interviews with some of the star's closest friends and family members.

“Our Brittany Murphy documentary cuts through the tabloid noise with an elevated, nuanced depiction of a sensational story,” said Jennifer O’Connell, HBO Max's EVP of Non-Fiction and Live-Action Family Programming. “Crafting a grounded account of Brittany Murphy’s life struggles and sudden passing comes with great responsibility and we’ve partnered with a masterful creative team to produce a thoughtful examination of a tragedy that has long been cause for speculation.”

Murphy's acting career began in 1991 with a starring role in the single-season sitcom Drexell's Class. Four years later, she found her breakthrough performance as Ty in the cult '90s film Clueless. She went on to star in movies like Girl, Interrupted, 8 Mile, Just Married, and Uptown Girls. Her final film, Something Wicked, was released posthumously in 2014.

In December 2009, the 32-year-old actress passed away from what Los Angeles County officials reported as "natural causes." According to the coroner's report, the actress died from a case of pneumonia, with a high level of various drugs in her system serving as a secondary factor. Less than a year later, her widower, producer Simon Monjack, died under similar circumstances. Conspiracy theories emerged about a toxic mold growing in the couple's home or whether or not the two had been poisoned, neither of which have ever been proven. The documentary is sure to cover these accusations, as well as the police investigation into Murphy's death.
