The search for the new Superman is finally over.

Following the announcement that Henry Cavill will no longer serve as everybody's favorite Man of Steel, the ultimate question remained: Who will be the new Superman? Well, we finally have our answer as actor David Corenswet has been officially named as Cavill's replacement.

It would be an understatement to say that the race for the new hero has been a nail-biter. Among the rumored actors vying for the spot were L'OFFICIEL cover star Nicholas Hoult, Tom Brittney, Michael B. Jordan, and of course, Corenswet.

It was a shock when Cavill revealed he would no longer be the one wearing the red cape, as his last appearance in the role was in the 2022 movie Black Adam.

"The changing of the guard is something that happens. I respect that," Cavill wrote in an Instagram post. "James and Peter have a universe to build. I wish them and all involved with the new universe the best of luck, and the happiest of fortunes."

James Gunn, the new head of DC Films told Variety in April that DC has "some really great choices" that he's very "excited" about.

“The next Superman has to be someone who has all the humanity that Superman has, but he’s also an alien,” Gunn continued. “It’s gotta be somebody who has the kindness and the compassion that Superman has and be somebody who you want to give a hug.”

Corenswet's official Superman debut will be in the upcoming Superman: Legacy movie. Previously, the actor has had acting credits in Pearl, Hollywood, and The Politician. In 2019, he that his “pie-in-the-sky ambition is definitely to play Superman,” per an interview with Entertainment Weekly.

Also joining the DC family is Rachel Brosnahan (best known for her role in The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel), who will star as the new Lois Lane.

It will be a while until we see these two hit the big screen for Superman: Legacy, as filming is a long way off from starting and the release date is estimated for no earlier than 2025. That said, while Cavill will always have a place in our hearts, it's safe to say the DC fandom is excited to see what fresh take Corenswet and Brosnahan will breathe into these characters.
