Last week, House of the Dragon left off on a somber note. The Battle of the Gullet turned out to be catastrophic, especially for Rhaenyra’s side. After riding into battle hoping to secure a victory for his mother, Rhaenyra’s son, Jacaerys, was fatally shot.House of the Dragon season 3 episode 2 opens with Baela retrieving Jacaerys’ body from the sea and flying back to Dragonstone. Though Rhaenyra’s allies won the battle, the cost was grave. When Rhaenyra enters the room where his body is laid, she begins talking to her son. She cries over him in anger and asks how he could do this to her. Sir Lorent, who barricaded Rhaenyra in her quarters before the battle at the behest of Jacaerys, offers up his sword and his life to the queen in exchange for his transgressions. She denies him, asking what good it would do now.&nbsp;Back in Driftmark, the battle continues on the beaches, but fighting soon comes to a halt as the Triarchy forces turn their focus to High Tide. As smoke rises in the castle, Alyn searches the sea and shipwrecks for Corlys, who went missing at the end of the previous episode.&nbsp;In the Vale, Rhaena meets Jeyne Erryn and asks her for refuge, certain that Rhaenyra will seek retribution for her role in Jacaerys' death. Jeyne tells Rhaena that the Vale is vast, and she will turn a blind eye to her and Sheepstealer, but that she should not come back to the castle.&nbsp;Meanwhile, in the Riverlands, Daemon is seen celebrating his victory over the Lannisters with the Stark and Tully forces, but the festivities soon turn somber as he receives a message from Rhaenyra with the tragic news. Beyond sharing word of Jacaerys' death, the message reveals that he has been summoned to King's Landing to claim the Iron Throne now that Aemond and Vhagar have been spotted leaving the city. Before he departs, he talks to Alys, who asks him for Harrenhal.&nbsp;Back on Driftmark, Baela arrives and joins Alyn in his search for Corlys. The pair talks about their memories of him, and Baela recalls how he treated her as a child. Addam searches for Corlys from the skies and eventually spots him, alive and breathing, on the shore.&nbsp;On the road, Larys and Aegon—captured by Rhaenyra's allies—are stopped as fighting breaks out between their captors and Triarchy attackers. They escape, gold in hand, and make for Rook's Rest, at Aegon's insistence.Corlys talks with Baela, Addam, and Alyn as they watch High Tide burn. "I have nothing to give you now but my name," he tells Alyn, who smiles at the sentiment.&nbsp;In King's Landing, a distressed Alicent watches as Aemond and Vhagar take to the sky, and talks to Commander Largent. She tells him Rhaenyra is returning, but refuses to reveal any additional details. She returns to the main hall of the Red Keep and calls for a small council meeting as she prepares to flee the castle.Daemon, returned from battle, meets Ulf and Karl in the halls of Dragonstone and admonishes them for leaving their position at Harrenhal. He moves through the castle in search of Rhaenyra and finds Mysaria, who has been elevated in rank since he last left her as a prisoner. They discuss Alicent and Rhaenyra's relationship, and wonder whether the former can be trusted. Before long, a maester arrives with news of a sighting of Aemond at Harrenhal. Daemon finds Rhaenyra, who asks him to find the wild dragon Sheepstealer and its mysterious rider—not knowing it is Rhaena. She cries over Jacaerys' death, and wonders whether her efforts to ascend to the throne have been worth it, now that she has lost two of her sons. Daemon tells her not to let their death be in vain, and begins speaking in High Valeryian. He tells her about his visions at Harrenhal about the Song of Ice and Fire, and describes a white-haired woman in the desert with three dragons.&nbsp;Back in King's Landing, Alicent continues to prepare for her escape with Helaena and Jahaera. Lord Jasper enters her room and begins speaking about her boldness in her rise in ranks and her relationship with Criston Cole. He assaults her and she fights back, but a maester enters the room and has the man arrested. As he is dragged out, Jasper says that Alicent has betrayed the throne and conspired against Aegon and Aemond.&nbsp;Rhaenyra dresses for battle and arrives at her council table, announcing that she is heading to King's Landing with her dragonriders to claim the throne. Her advisors caution against it, but she is set on going. As she departs, Mysaria hands her Viserys' crown and asks her to&nbsp;remember that she has been faithful.&nbsp;Alicent finds Helaena in the garden, and she tells her daughter her plan, saying, "You I may yet redeem." Alicent and Helaena head up to the walls of the castle and tell Helaena that she can exercise her authority as queen in Aemond and Aegon's absence. The pair convinces the captain in charge of artillery not to attack any of Rhaenyra's dragons and tells him to allow her to enter the city.&nbsp;Vhagar and Aemond fly over Criston Cole and Gwayne Hightower's camp as they head for Harrenhal. The army readies to march, and Vhagar lands, unleashing destruction upon the ruined castle. After dismounting and killing a group of soldiers, a fully armored Aemond arrives at Simon Strong's dinner table, announcing that he is seeking Daemon. Strong does not resist and tells him to occupy the castle as he sees fit. Aemond kills him and one of his sons. In the midst of the struggle, another of Strong's sons stabs Aemond under his armor, but Aemond kills him anyway. Alys arrives in the corridor, and Aemond, weakened from blood loss and shock, crawls toward her and asks for her help.&nbsp;Rhaenyra and her dragons arrive in King's Landing. The guards lay their swords down for Rhaenyra. "Do not be afraid, I've come to make things right," she says as she enters the Red Keep. Once she and Daemon are inside, they are met with several resisting soldiers, whom Daemon kills. They move through the castle, and Daemon opens the doors to the throne room for her. She approaches, but a large group of soldiers emerges. She lifts her sword, readying for battle, but the Gold Cloaks and their commander enter. They pledge loyalty to Daemon, their former commander, and Rhaenyra, and arrest the resistant group. Though her path is clear, Rhaenyra demands Aegon the Usurper appear before she sits on the throne. Daemon and the Gold Cloaks search the keep for Aegon, and eventually find a maester who tells them he has fled. Meanwhile, Alicent and Helaena roam the streets, looking for a way to leave the city. As Daemon searches the dungeon, someone appears and leads him down a dark corridor, presenting a "gift" courtesy of Larys Strong. Daemon looks inside the dark cell and laughs once he sees what is in there.&nbsp;In the throne room, Rhaenyra greets the formerly imprisoned loyal lords and ladies. Lord Jasper is presented to her, and Daemon returns to the room with Otto Hightower. He forces him to kneel and eggs Rhaenyra on, telling her she must kill Otto. She is hesitant, and Daemon offers to kill him instead. She steadies her sword as tears run down her face, and Otto bends his neck down. Otto begins to speak, but she beheads him. Daemon kills Lord Jasper. Rhaenyra walks through the blood pooling on the stone floor and slowly steps up to the iron throne, leaving behind a trail of bloody footprints. She sits on the throne with tears on her face as she surveys the room. Just seconds later, a guard approaches with Helaena and Alicent, who see Otto dead on the floor. Alicent's face turns, and the credits roll.&nbsp;
