<p>FX's <em>Love Story </em>is fictionalized in many ways, however much of what was shown had more truth to it than one may realize</p>

<p>Between the '90s style nostalgia and the mystique surrounding <a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/pop-culture/the-real-reason-jfk-jr-never-introduced-carolyn-bessette-to-jackie-kennedy-american-love-story-series-ryan-murphy" target="_blank" rel="noopener">John Kennedy Jr.</a> and Carolyn Bessette's relationship, FX's <em><a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/film-tv/grace-gummer-interview-love-story-carolyn-bessette-jfk-jr-ryan-murphy-show-release-date-cast" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Love Story</a> </em>has garnered quite the fanbase. After episode 5 aired, fans were truly shocked at the events that unfolded, prompting many to wonder how grounded in factual history the show r</p>
<p>At this point in the series, <a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/fashion/carolyn-bessette-kennedy-90s-style-wedding-dress-jfk-jr" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Carolyn Bessette</a> (Sarah Pidgeon) and John F Kennedy Jr.'s (Paul Anthony Kelly) relationship is progressing, and Kennedy invites Bessette to the Kennedy compound in Hyannis Port to meet the rest of the family. The Hyannis Port compound holds a lot of significance to the real-life Kennedy family, who have had a foothold on the property since 1926. Since it was first acquired, the compound has been used as John F. Kennedy's base during his 1960 campaign, as well as to host high-profile family events, like Maria Shriver and Arnold Schwarzenegger's 1986 wedding, where guests like Andy Warhol, Grace Jones, and Barbara Walters gathered to celebrate the couple.</p>
<p>In the episode, Bessette is nervous&mdash;understandably so&mdash;and unfortunately, her beau neglects to prepare her on the unofficial rules of the compound, as established by the "undisputed matriarch," Ethel Kennedy. Kennedy advises Bessette to call Ethel Mrs. Kennedy, as described to <em>People </em>in an excerpt of J. Tamborelli's book <em>The Kennedy Heirs, </em>almost word for word: &ldquo;John winced,&rdquo; he writes, adding, &ldquo;If I were you, I think I&rsquo;d probably go with Mrs. Kennedy.&rdquo;</p>
<p>Besides that, he fails to inform her that she needed to be prepared for a geopolitical discussion at dinner, as is tradition, and that breakfast was on a sign-up basis. Many aspects of this show are fictionalized, but there is a lot of truth baked into the events viewers saw unfold at Bessette's first visit to Hyannis Port, according to showrunner Brian Simpson. &nbsp;<span>&ldquo;We knew that Carolyn had a complicated relationship with the Kennedy compound,&rdquo; he tells <a href="https://www.tvinsider.com/1248206/love-story-carolyn-bessette-ethel-kennedy-dinner-scene-episode-5-interview/"><em>TV</em> <em>Insider</em></a>, &ldquo;John, who had lived a charmed life in many ways, didn&rsquo;t fully prepare Carolyn for what it was like, and so it&rsquo;s accurately depicted there for him... </span><span style="background-color: transparent; font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-variant-ligatures: inherit; font-variant-caps: inherit; font-weight: inherit;">He didn&rsquo;t prepare her that she should study up on magazines like&nbsp;</span><em>Foreign Affairs</em><span style="background-color: transparent; font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-variant-ligatures: inherit; font-variant-caps: inherit; font-weight: inherit;">, other things that are not in most people&rsquo;s vernacular, and that they were going to be quizzed at dinner. You had to be prepared at dinner to answer questions and be on the hot seat, and he didn&rsquo;t tell her things, like there was a sign-up for breakfast every day. We pulled this from a lot of research, but really, on her first couple of trips there, she really didn&rsquo;t feel well prepared.&rdquo;</span></p>

<p><span></span>Despite the tense atmosphere of the visit, the episode sees Kennedy proposing to Bessette on a rowboat in Hyannis, and given the aforementioned events, Bessette is hesitant. The tension builds and explodes during a fight in Central Park, the couple's first public dispute. However, everything eventually works out, and <em>Love Story </em>episode 5 has a happy ending with Bessette accepting Kennedy's proposal.&nbsp;</p>
