Nightlife queen and queer icon Susanne Bartsch is the subject of a new documentary about her influence on the New York City party scene. Perhaps best known in today’s circles thanks to On Top‚her seasonal Tuesday night party at The Standard in Manhattan’s Meatpacking District—the matron of free-for-all dance parties has actually been hosting them since the mid-1980s, making her the perfect subject.
Of the many topics the documentary will touch on is Bartsch’s network of A-Listers, such as supermodel of the world RuPaul. He makes an appearance in the trailer, citing that Bartsch “championed” him at a time when hardly anyone vocalized their support for him. The highlight, however, comes in the form of Bartsch's balancing between throwing raucous parties via a purpose of activism, specifically through the onset of the AIDS crisis.
