The actor returns to television in a series that is intriguing, to say the least.

Four years after the conclusion of his popular <a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/film-tv/chloe-east-hbo-generation-lena-dunham" target="_blank" rel="noopener">HBO</a> show <a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/film-tv/audrey-hepburn-tv-series-coming-soon" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The Leftovers</a>, <a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/film-tv/angelina-jolie-and-jennifer-aniston-will-both-attend-the-golden-globes" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Justin Theroux</a> returns to the small screen with a new show for Apple TV+, <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2021/04/23/arts/television/mosquito-coast-paul-justin-theroux-apple.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The Mosquito Coast</a>. The series is based on a <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2021/04/23/arts/television/mosquito-coast-paul-justin-theroux-apple.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">novel of the same name</a>, written by Paul Theroux, the actor's uncle.
In the show, the always impeccable Theroux plays Allie Fox, a Massachusetts man who moves with his wife Margot (Melissa George) and their children to Latin America. While the true reasons for this abrupt departure being only elliptically revealed late in the progress of the story&mdash; which we'll keep to ourselves&mdash;Allie has excellent motives for running away. He explains his distaste for the contemporary world, his aspirations of a brilliant inventor always being disappointed, and his hampered will to build for a kind of autonomous enclave for himself and his family&mdash;which makes him a kind of cool Zadist crossbred with MacGyver, in short.

Already adapted in a rather banal 1986 film by Peter Weir, the <a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/film-tv/new-movie-tv-shows-to-watch-stream-may-2021-netflix-hbo-max-disney" target="_blank" rel="noopener">series</a> finds a new life. Though the two adaptations share certain assumptions&mdash;refusal of consumerism, desire to build a utopia, etc.&mdash;little coincide in their treatment. Here, in the Neil Cross version, the story verses less on the side of the political fable (which is approached somewhat) than of the paranoid thriller. Curiously, the rhythm of the narration seems anesthetized; the vaporous atmosphere with the burning lights contrasts with the growing anxiety of the fleeing family, lugged from dubious ferryman to anxiety-inducing hacienda towards a destination that seems increasingly distant. Tending towards a mirage, this path populated with pitfalls, disappointments, and more pitfalls is painfully surveyed, empathizing with the difficulty that the characters have in progress.
Carefully, Cross opens the drawers of the plot which seems to promise unexpected revelations and characters. This daring bet sometimes threatens to tip the spectator into a sweaty torpor, as if they were witnessing a languid pilot episode. We prefer to salute the courage to lead his story in this way&mdash;to only shine its effects sparingly, keep its springs secret, and leave the issues in the shade so as to only shed light on them at the last moment. The Mosquito Coast reminds us, with delicacy, of our duties as spectators: respecting the virtues of patience and sustained attention. Maybe it's time to relearn how to watch. &nbsp;
