When director Kane Parsons first released the science fiction horror web series "Backrooms" in 2022, it garnered much attention with the horror community and beyond. Four years later, the creepypasta-inspired series was transformed into a movie and distributed by A24 on May 29. Stars include Chiwetel Ejiofor, Renate Reinsve, Mark Duplass, Finn Bennett, Lukita Maxwell, and Avan Jogia, alongside others.

Yet, when she moves back home to take care of her dying mother (Michèle Duquet), a married couple (Keana Lyn Bastidas and Jeff Yung) sent the podcasters audio of paranormal noises taking place in their home. This sends Evy down a spiral, especially when the film heavily emphasizes the auditory rather than the visual.
