With only a week left of 2017, the visionary Solange Knowles hops back in the director's chair, as she steps into the role for SZA’s latest music video for “The Weekend.” Much like her own music video for “Cranes in the Sky,” Knowles produces an airy, sensual, dance-focused video set amongst dynamic architectural spaces. The locales — a parking garage, apartment building balcony — serve only as frames to the movement of SZA. The video is bookended by the closed caption, “one opted out, an imbalance of power, shifted the whole tide, it waved and waved.”
This January, SZA will attend the Grammy Awards where she is nominated for Best New Artist alongside the likes of Khalid and Julia Michaels. The nomination follows the release of her debut studio album, CTRL, on which “The Weekend” appears. Though not a new artist to avid music followers, SZA’s break into the mainstream proves the power of true talent.
Here, with a video directed by Solange, we learn what we’ve already known: great artists respect great artists.
