Rapper Kendrick Lamar has been awarded a Pulitzer Prize — one of the top American awards in the fields of journalism, music, literature, and theater. The Pulitzer Committee recognized Lamar's album DAMN., which was released in April 2017. In it, Lamar speaks on acute social issues, especially those concerned with the lives of African Americans. The album, which features songs like "Humble" and "Loyalty," received heavy critical acclaim, securing Best Album at the 2017 BET Awards and Best Rap Album at the 2017 Grammys.

Lamar is the first rapper to receive the Pulitzer Prize.

Also receiving awards this year are journalists Jodie Cantor and Megan Tuey (The New York Times) and Ronan Farrow (The New Yorker), the authors who spearheaded investigations and broke the news of disgraced Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein.
