But what makes a book-to-screen interpretation worth our time?&nbsp;

Many beloved literary classics are getting the Hollywood treatment this year, from Homer’s The Odyssey to Emily Brontë’s Wuthering Heights.&nbsp;
Some adaptations are new, like the upcoming fantasy film Children of Blood and Bone based on Tomi Adeyemi’s 2018 novel. But most of the adaptations slated for release in 2026 or early 2027 have already been done once before. So now the internet is asking: do we really need another Pride and Prejudice or a new Harry Potter series?&nbsp;
For the Film &amp; TV industry, the answer is yes. First, there’s the security of a devoted, built-in audience, book lovers who can’t wait to see the stories they know and love reimagined for the big screen. Second, this stream of adaptations capitalizes on a fanbase’s expectations and their desire to know whether the remake has held up to its source material or not.&nbsp;

Elle Kennedy’s hockey romance Off Campus was a sensation on Prime Video, Alice Feeney’s crime thriller His &amp; Hers was Netflix’s No.10 most popular TV title of all time, with 104 million views globally, and Janice Hadlow’s Jane Austen spinoff, The Other Bennet Sister, made waves on both sides of the pond as a fresh take on Pride and Prejudice. The list could truly go on and on.&nbsp;
In the right hands, some adaptations have even created the defining pop culture moments of the year. Just look at the ongoing fervor and excitement over Christopher Nolan’s blockbuster version of The Odyssey, or think back to the storm of public opinion around Emerald Fennell’s contentious take on Wuthering Heights in February, billed as the greatest love story ever told.&nbsp;

In response, book sales have also surged, with people attempting to finish the book before they see the corresponding film or TV series. Ahead of the Wuthering Heights release starring Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi, a new generation of readers encountered Emily Brontë’s novel for the first time.&nbsp;
The New York Times&nbsp;<a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2026/01/29/style/wuthering-heights-movie-2026-margot-robbie.html">reported</a> data from publishing industry tracker Circana Bookscan, where sales of Wuthering Heights more than doubled in 2025 as compared to 2024, reaching 180,000 print copies in the United States alone. This summer, sales for The Odyssey rose by 76 percent, also according to Circana Bookscan, and there’s even been a rise in book clubs reading&nbsp;The Odyssey before watching Nolan’s three-hour-long epic.&nbsp;
But does it matter how faithful the adaptation is to the book?&nbsp;
In Linda Hutcheon’s book, A Theory of Adaptation, she explores the creative practice of adaptation in the context of literary and media studies: “As a process of creation, the act of adaptation always involves both (re) interpretation and then (re) creation.”&nbsp;
Hutcheon, who is a cultural scholar and Professor of English and Comparative Literature at the University of Toronto, argues that change is inevitable when adapting a story for a new medium, even if the person reinventing it doesn’t consciously alter or update parts of the narrative.&nbsp;
Of course, not every detail in the text or each line of dialogue can always remain the same. Choices made by filmmakers in the adaptation process need to suit the constraints of a script, and take into account what elements can be rendered cinematically on screen.&nbsp;
“Adaptation is a form of repetition without replication,” Hutcheon writes, emphasizing how an adaptation should be seen as a creative work of its own merit that brings the original story to life, not as an exact copy of the source material.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The best part about this year’s slate of adaptations is all the cultural discourse they spark, especially since one adaptation is never going to please everyone.&nbsp;
Take&nbsp;The Odyssey, for example. Classicist Emily Wilson, known for the acclaimed 2017 translation that Nolan cited as inspiration for his film, published a scathing review in the London Review of Books that went so viral it briefly crashed the LRB’s website. Wilson isn’t shy about her critical opinion of The Odyssey: “It lacks psychological, emotional, political and ethical depth.”&nbsp;
Novelist Joyce Carol Oates entered the fray afterward, defending Nolan’s film and writing on X about Wilson’s review, “her tone of dismissal &amp; haughty superiority strike a sour note…within the world of translators this seems all the more surprising since all translations are, presumably, subjective &amp; not equivalent to the original text.”&nbsp;
Watching this literary debate go viral online, we’re reminded that we should treat an adaptation within the constraints of its medium, and that every generation has the chance to tell these stories in their own way. I'm reminded of literary critic Roland Barthes's famous essay, Death of the Author, where he reasons that the meaning of a literary work belongs to the reader, not the author. “The birth of the reader must be ransomed by death of the Author,” Barthes said.&nbsp;&nbsp;
There’s no answer to the question about which adaptation is the right one, and there’s never one absolute right version either. Well, maybe except for the world you imagined when you first read the book. <h2 style="text-align: center;">Jane Austen’s Sense and Sensibility</h2>

Directed by Georgia Oakley and starring Daisy Edgar-Jones and Esmé Creed-Miles, this adaptation of Austen's debut novel tells the story of the Dashwood sisters, Elinor and Marianne, who experience love and heartbreak in the aftermath of their father's death.&nbsp;Sense and Sensibility comes to theatres on October 16. After you read the book, don't forget to watch the 1995 Academy Award-winning film adaptation by Emma Thompson. It's iconic for a reason.&nbsp;

<h2 style="text-align: center;">John Steinbeck's East of Eden</h2>

Largely considered to be his best work and a classic of American literature, Steinbeck's novel is set in California’s Salinas Valley and follows the destinies of two families—the Trasks and the Hamiltons—whose generations helplessly reenact the fall of Adam and Eve and the poisonous rivalry of Cain and Abel. First adapted in 1955 by Elia Kazan, Netflix's upcoming television series is a modern reimagining of the book starring Florence Pugh and is set to be released in Fall 2026.&nbsp;

<h2 style="text-align: center;">Kazuo Ishiguro’s&nbsp;Klara and the Sun</h2>

The dystopian science-fiction story follows Klara, a robot girl designed to prevent loneliness, who tries to save a heartbroken family of humans. Ishiguro’s novel explores a&nbsp;fundamental question: what does it mean to love? Directed by Taika Waititi and starring Jenna Ortega, Klara and the Sun comes to theatres on October 23.&nbsp;
