        <p><span>During the COVID-19 pandemic, when most hotels were downsizing or closing altogether, the Maybourne Hotel Group&mdash;which is owned by the hotelier Paddy McKillen and the royal family of Qatar, and counts jewels like Claridges and The Connaught in London and The Maybourne Beverly Hills among its properties&mdash;was doubling down on its expansion. McKillen has been overseeing the company&rsquo;s first new-build property on the <a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/fashion/cannes-film-festival-best-red-carpet-fashion" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Côte d&rsquo;Azur</a>&mdash;a place the Belfast-born hotelier knows well, having spent most of his summers in Cap Ferrat with his family. The Maybourne Riviera, which opened quietly this past summer, is a dramatic, modernist </span><span style="background-color: transparent; font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-variant-ligatures: inherit; font-variant-caps: inherit; font-weight: inherit; letter-spacing: 0px;">hulk&mdash;think a Case Study house meets an Art Deco cruise liner&mdash;sculpted right into the cliffs above the picturesque village of Roquebrune-Cap-Martin. &ldquo;It&rsquo;s one of the great sights on earth with its views of <a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/fashion/styling-tricks-to-learn-from-grace-kelly" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Monaco</a>, the majestic Italian coastline, and Corsica in the distant horizon,&rdquo; says McKillen. The site was once the home of the Vista Palace, a popular resort built in the 1930s when the region became fashionable among the stylish set, including <a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/fashion/gabrielle-chanel-history" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Coco Chanel</a>, Pablo Picasso, Le Corbusier, and Eileen Gray, the Irish architect and furniture designer whose modernist villa E-1027 sits just below The Maybourne Rivera.</span></p>

        <p><span>The Vista Palace had been shuttered for more than a decade when McKillen found the property; because there was already a footprint, he was allowed to go big with his plans for the historic coastline. The exterior, designed by the French architect Jean-Michel Wilmotte&mdash;known for his work on major projects like the historic <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2018/06/01/travel/lutetia-hotel-paris-reopening.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Hotel Lutetia in Paris</a> and the Museum of Islamic Art in Doha&mdash;is a sleek assemblage of glass and steel, including a cantilevered pool that juts out to sea. &ldquo;Rather than a brutal masonry object on the hill, Jean-Michel wished to have the hotel feel light and translucent, almost ephemeral,&rdquo; says McKillen. &ldquo;It&rsquo;s like a glass cloud.&rdquo; </span></p>

        <p><span>The 69 rooms and suites&mdash;with floor-to-ceiling windows, carved-out tubs, and some with private plunge pools&mdash;were created by an impressive mix of A-list designers, including </span><span style="background-color: transparent; font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-variant-ligatures: inherit; font-variant-caps: inherit; font-weight: inherit; letter-spacing: 0px;"><a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/travel-living/pierre-yovanovitch-furniture-chateau" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Pierre Yovanovitch</a>, André Fu, and Bryan O&rsquo;Sullivan Studio. The hotel commissioned more than 1,000 works of art and objects from <a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/art/mcarthur-binion-artist-chicago-lehmann-maupin" target="_blank" rel="noopener">international artists</a> and artisans to complete the look. McKillen, who has in the past called himself a &ldquo;frustrated artist,&rdquo; often collaborates with the world&rsquo;s top creatives for his projects&mdash;Château La Coste, his hotel and vineyard in Aix-en-Provence, is a monument to art and design, and features a sculpture park stocked with works by Louise Bourgeois, Renzo Piano, Kengo Kuma, and Jean Nouvel.</span></p>

                <p><span>McKillen&rsquo;s search for excellence also extends to the culinary world. At The Maybourne Riviera, he&rsquo;s lured Mauro Colagreco, the Argentinian chef at Mirazur, the <a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/travel-living/chef-yannick-alleno-laurence-bonnel-moet-and-chandon-champagne-france" target="_blank" rel="noopener">three-Michelin-starred</a> restaurant in nearby Menton, to open two seafood restaurants on the property, with Jean-Georges Vongerichten heading up the third eatery. </span></p>

        <p><span>McKillen, however, wants his guests to spend as much time exploring the area as they do indulging in the property&rsquo;s amenities. He rattles off the cultural highlights that one must visit: &ldquo;The South of France is the world&rsquo;s top <a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/art/artcrush-gala-aspen-art-museum-creatives" target="_blank" rel="noopener">art destination</a> these days,&rdquo; he says.&rdquo; There&rsquo;s Maja Hoffmann&rsquo;s Luma in Arles, the Keifer studio in Orange, the Maeght Foundation in Saint Paul de Vence...&rdquo; And for those who want to stay close by, there&rsquo;s Gray&rsquo;s E-1027 house, which McKillen was instrumental in restoring and is now open to the public. </span></p>
