The season's designer debuts held plenty of surprises&mdash;especially when it came to archive-inspired looks.

The most anticipated Spring/Summer 2026 designer debuts unfolded like richly layered DJ sets. New creative directors riffed on house codes while sampling their more immediate predecessors, spinning fresh collections that felt surprisingly collaborative.&nbsp;
In a season marked by an unprecedented number of creative director appointments, Jonathan Anderson took fashion&rsquo;s lone genius myth head on at Dior, dramatizing the weight of expectation with a short film by acclaimed documentarian Adam Curtis that intercut footage of the maison&rsquo;s seven previous creative directors with looped, dissonant soundscapes.&nbsp;
&ldquo;Daring to enter the house of Dior requires an empathy with its history,&rdquo; Anderson wrote in his show notes. &ldquo;And the resoluteness to put all of it in a box. Not to erase it, but to store it, looking ahead, coming back to bits, traces, or entire silhouettes from time to time.&rdquo; His white box show space in the Tuileries became a stage to revisit and reanimate not only Christian Dior&rsquo;s Bar jackets and panniered Cigale dresses, but also John Galliano&rsquo;s mini skirts and theatrical millinery and Maria Grazia Chiuri&rsquo;s sheer layers.&nbsp;

The rest of Paris Fashion Week kept the beat. At Balenciaga, Pierpaolo Piccioli cued up Crist&oacute;bal Balenciaga&rsquo;s architectural Balloon dress with Demna&rsquo;s butterfly shield sunglasses, while at Gucci, Demna put Alessandro Michele&rsquo;s tiger prints with Tom Ford&rsquo;s ultra-short hemlines on the turntable. Michael Rider juxtaposed Phoebe Philo&rsquo;s oversized tailoring with Hedi Slimane&rsquo;s skinny jeans at Celine, transforming instantly recognizable silhouettes into inventive, layered configurations. At Chanel, Matthieu Blazy closed the season with a mashup of Coco Chanel&rsquo;s 2.55s and two-tone pumps and Karl Lagerfeld&rsquo;s feathered hairpieces and pastel tweeds, capping off the week&rsquo;s riffs and improvisations with a masterful headline act.
