The jewelry designer opens up her archive to&nbsp;L&rsquo;OFFICIEL, revealing the inspirations behind her creations.

&ldquo;I&rsquo;ve been using my hands to tell stories for as long as I can remember,&rdquo; says Copenhagen-based fine jewelry designer Sophie Bille Brahe, 46. &ldquo;As a child, I was always drawing, painting, or creating things. I&rsquo;d make jewelry, and when I was 14, I even made chandeliers for the homes of my parents&rsquo; friends.&rdquo; Before high school, Brahe decided that she wanted to become a goldsmith. She landed an apprenticeship in her native Denmark after graduation and trained for four and a half years. &ldquo;It&rsquo;s all very technical, not creative,&rdquo; she recalls. &ldquo;But it was important that I learned the metal, knew the craft, and could use it to support myself.&rdquo;
After earning her master&rsquo;s at London&rsquo;s Royal College of Art, Brahe returned to Denmark, where she launched her namesake jewelry label in 2011. &ldquo;For me, designing jewelry felt like opening the doors to a beautiful universe that existed between craft and art and fashion,&rdquo; she says. &ldquo;There was a lot of freedom in that space, and it just felt like my space.&rdquo;
Nature has been Brahe&rsquo;s greatest source of inspiration. She&rsquo;s particularly fascinated by the horizon, where the sky meets the sea&mdash;a point reflected in the wavy diamond-and-bezel design of her signature Grand Ensemble Ocean ring. She&rsquo;s equally captivated by the very existence of diamonds&mdash;&ldquo;the stars from our earth&rdquo;&mdash;and while she often incorporates pearls into her designs, imagining them as the moon, &ldquo;there&rsquo;s something so magical about a diamond,&rdquo; says Brahe. &ldquo;I always feel that they are borrowed; we&rsquo;re passing through their lives, and we&rsquo;re so lucky to be a little part of them.&rdquo;

How her jewels are displayed is so important to Brahe that she even designed the tables for her Copenhagen store. &ldquo;Jewelry is meant to be worn, and it dies a little bit when it&rsquo;s just lying somewhere,&rdquo; she says. &ldquo;I thought, How do you give something so small the right attention in a space? I wanted it to stand out but still represent me, and look as clean as possible.&rdquo; That pursuit&mdash;combined with her love of flowers&mdash;led her to branch out into designing glassblown vases, too. &ldquo;I follow the waves in my life,&rdquo; says Brahe, whose offerings also include a travel-inspired candle as well as her coveted velvet jewelry boxes. &ldquo;Even inspiration feels like a wave inside me, and as it gets closer, it becomes clearer what I need to get out. But the story of my life is in my jewelry; it&rsquo;s like my diary.

Brahe is more concerned with memories than with &ldquo;just decorating a space,&rdquo; which is why her home and boutiques are filled almost exclusively with heirlooms. &ldquo;Everything that I have is inherited,&rdquo; she says, explaining that, in the early 1800s, her aristocratic ancestors were notable patrons of the arts who hosted many of the country&rsquo;s most celebrated artists at their sprawling manor.&ldquo; This was a very long time ago, but I grew up hearing stories about [my relatives] and the artists they supported,&rdquo; she says. &ldquo;We even had some original works [that had been passed down] at home, so I was always surrounded by pieces that could have been in a museum.&rdquo; Among them were neo-classicist sculptures by 19th-century Danish artist Bertel Thorvaldsen, who frequented her family&rsquo;s manor. Brahe bought one of his pieces to display in her first store in Copenhagen, and when she was opening her New York boutique in 2024, she wanted to do the same.

She arranged a visit to the castle-like property that once belonged to her family, where she discovered&mdash;and ultimately purchased&mdash;a pair of Thorvaldsen&rsquo;s stone lion sculptures that would become the most treasured pieces in her archive. &ldquo;They represent my story and a sense of forever&mdash;something that once was, but still is.&rdquo; The sculptures serve a greater purpose in the Madison Avenue store, too: &ldquo;If I can&rsquo;t be there every day to take care of this place, at least the lions are there to guard it.&rdquo;
