In her book,&nbsp;<a href="https://press.princeton.edu/books/paperback/9780691166292/men-women-and-chain-saws?srsltid=AU7gw4WCFUTAb6azBIxyCNS6gI5K_BLtIDahIweo-lU7wFvYw2Pv5n-D">Men, Women, and Chain Saws</a>, Carol Clover draws on a plethora of classic horror films, and slashers in particular, to name and describe the tender and tough archetype that is the final girl. According to <a href="https://www.google.com/goto?url=CAESegHrOzAVldRuwEy4GswF1e49iy2JEtHO5MDn6kpdLA2LUxxV0oQjE2V4iPZ6OreKHMjQRGVDF2X4Q853NO3xaKKxjlGxxgJSlO-OghNZCPLsEHnaKGOg7117qhdL4QfWfEGrEAX5W51ceE8UnxySx5RQ6YJFbm7m7l_3">Clover</a>, the final girl is a “boyish” and sexually innocent survivor whose perspective the audience is forced to adopt halfway through the film through shifting camerawork. Still, it’s not only the script and camerawork that construct these heroines. Rather, each final girl has a unique sartorial identity through which their stories are mobilized and immortalized. From classic cardigans to rugged denim, here is a breakdown of the enduring style of the final girl.
Texas Chain Saw Massacre introduced the world to Sally Hardesty, one of the first modern final girls, who flees from Leatherface in a sleeveless halter-style lilac tank top and lightweight white bell-bottom trousers. As she sprints through brambles and thorn bushes under the blistering, humid Texas heat, her pristine clothes are progressively stained with dirt, sweat, and streaks of bright crimson blood, transforming her simple summer casual wear into a visceral visual map of her trauma and survival. While Sally’s survival is defined by sheer, exhausting physical endurance, later final girls saw the archetype transform from the hunted into the hunters.&nbsp;&nbsp;

In Halloween (1978), Laurie Strode’s deliriously intense encounters with Michael Myers, or The Shape, come to a head when she stabs him wearing a typical ‘70s cool girl look. In a light-blue button-down shirt torn from the attack paired with dark, flared denim jeans, her ordinary babysitter’s uniform becomes a battle-worn survival suit, one of many in the lineage of stylish horror heroines. Then there was Ellen Ripley in Alien whose functional, off-white Nostromo flight jumpsuit layered over a simple white T-shirt contrasted vulnerable humanity against raw, cold industrial sci-fi machinery. Who could forget about Sidney Prescott? In Wes Craven’s Scream (1996), she battles Ghostface in ‘90s normcore, donning a cozy, oversized olive-green and beige knits to her iconic Canadian tuxedo. Just a year later Julie James in I Know What You Did Last Summer (1997) would go on to represent the ultimate turn-of-the-millennium teen look: fitted tanks, ribbed crop tops, low-rise bootcut denim, and a memorable pair of overalls, all offering a highly stylized, cinematic contrast to the gloomy, rain-soaked fishing town.&nbsp;
Over the years, final girls have continued to deliver memorable looks. Dani Ardor, for instance, from Ari Aster’s Midsommar (2019) is not fighting an external villain but rather an internal unraveling as she slowly succumbs to and is absorbed by a pagan Swedish cult called the Hårga. She begins the film in ordinary, oversized gray and black winter hoodies reflecting her intense grief. Once in Sweden, she transitions to breathable, white linen traditional attire with floral embroidery, culminating in her transformation into the May Queen, where she wears a massive, suffocatingly heavy gown and crown constructed entirely out of thousands of vibrant, living wildflowers. In Ready or Not, Grace Le Domas’ wedding gown becomes tactical gear: she tears off the heavy train to run faster, rips off a piece of the hem to bandage her wounds, adds a bandolier of ammunition across her chest, and ditches her heels for a pair of Converse sneakers. Maxine Minx in the X and MaXXXine films drapes herself in a wardrobe that serves as an homage to vintage sleaze and glamour. Our heroine in the first film sports an iconic 1970s blue denim overalls set, a red-and-white ringlet tee, and bright blue eyeshadow, while in the second, her small-town ambitions of Hollywood fame set her style into the world of 1980s power-glam, featuring bold silk suits, high-waisted leather jackets, workout spandex, and dramatic Hollywood starlet sunglasses.

Perhaps the most self-aware and self-referential rendering of the final girl hails from Jane Schoenbrun’s Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma. Fresh from winning the Queer Palm at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival, the film chronicles Kris (Hannah Einbinder), an up-and-coming non-binary indie director, who is hired by a major Hollywood studio to reboot a 1980s slasher franchise called Camp Miasma. Determined to give the reboot a meaningful, queer reimagining, Kris tracks down Billy Presley (Gillian Anderson), the reclusive final girl and scream queen from the original 1980 film who lives cloistered away in isolation at the actual abandoned Pacific Northwest campground where the first movie was shot. As the line between fiction and reality shatters, Kris finds herself pulled into the surreal, blood-soaked world of her own making, haunted by the franchise’s supernatural serial killer, Little Death.&nbsp;
While Kris is all business, Billy is all fun. Hannah Einbinder’s Kris fashions herself akin to the boyish and innocent final girls we’ve come to know: grey sweatpants and a light purple-ish shirt one day, sweatshirts and jeans the next, Bass Pro Shops boots, Canadian wool camping socks, until a pivotal moment of the film when her cropped Gap T-shirt with girlish pointelle and custom pink underwear strikingly contrast against the dark forest as our final girl finally flees from the terrors therein. Elsewhere in the snowy enclave, Gillian Anderson’s Billy blankets herself in silks, furs, velvets, turbans, jewels, Hollywood golden locs, and a fully custom 1940s-inspired slip and duster. You get the idea that she could be plowing through the snow in stilettos. With grainy 1980s VHS aesthetics, intentionally obvious stage sets, and over-the-top gore, Schoenbrun demonstrates both a reverence for the genre and a willingness to further, complicate, and call attention to all of the expectations, however perfect or imperfect, that it conjures. Thus, through clothing, Schoenbrun and costume designer Kendra Terpenning offer us both the final girl of our memories and the final girl of our dreams.&nbsp;
