From Y2K-Tease to Indie Sleaze, here is how on-stage styling has shifted from the early-aughts to today.

Why lie? <a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/music/harry-styles-tour-madison-square-garden-30-night-residency-tickets-ticketmaster-price" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Stage presence</a> is meant to signal <a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/men/v-bts-best-style-outfits-looks-kim-taehyung-girlfriend-age-album-solo-career-songs-bts-concert-tour" target="_blank" rel="noopener">fashion essence</a>.&nbsp;
And with that, has come an onslaught of stars born to serve—both looks and chart-topping singles. From the early ‘90s to now, the celebrities, stylists, and teams behind the creative direction of the looks we know and love today are to be remembered in the name of herstory. From sequined-sheer gowns on Rihanna at the 2014 CDFA Awards to Madonna’s magenta "Material Girl" getup (embossed in thousands of dollars worth of diamonds, might we add), stroll down memory lane and remember what once granted <a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/fashion/chappell-roan-jean-paul-gaultier-archive-dress-makeup-grammys-2025" target="_blank" rel="noopener">A-listers' fashion fame</a>.

The '90s were a time characterized by divas at large. From Madonna to Whitney Houston to Mariah Carey to Céline Dion—just to name a few—fashion was of the essence. The vocal vixens were playful and poised, yet full of personality. Think Madonna’s Jean Paul Gautier cone bra or the Spice Girls stage-style—embracing streetwear-chic through a mix of tracksuits, crop tops, and sportswear—to those like Courtney Love in baby-doll dresses, fishnet tights, undone hair, and smudged eyeliner. Soon after came Destiny's Child and Janet Jackson, rocking low-rise jeans and sequined tops and blinged-out belts; icons who couldn't help but accessorize to the nines. All things considered, the ‘90s were experimental and full of no-phone-zones, without stars having to worry over social media or being on trend, but rather, how much midriff could channel just the right amount of magic.

Arguably, the fan-favorite decade amongst pop star perfection, dare we say… Y2K has always slayed? Semi-similarly to the tail end of the ‘90s, stars were head-to-toe in color, charisma, and of course, cargos. The Juicy Couture tracksuits served as second skins for most, while red carpets were just as important as sound-checks. From Britney Spears to Christina Aguilera, low-rise everything was, well, everything—especially when paired with a strappy heel, bedazzled G-string, and the must-have mini skirt of the moment. That being said, a matching set was no match for its preceding decade. 20 years ago, truly nothing was off the table (i.e., Justin Timberlake and Spears at the 2001 American Music Awards). I guess you could say, the early aughts ate us all up.&nbsp;

Surely, you haven’t forgotten the days of the skinny jeans, statement necklaces, and studded high heels craze, have you? The 2010s rejected the idea that less was more. Think Katy Perry’s neon hair, her kitschy "Teenage Dream"&nbsp;music video, and the flower crown she donned on every other carpet. Championing other aesthetics like Indie Sleaze and Avant-Garde, singers served down, like Lady Gaga in her meat dress at the MTV Video Music Awards. Plus, pop stars were pulling up to red carpets in self-styled looks, animal print leotards, and a glossy leg—all while rocking a studded Valentino shoe. Or, a moto jacket.

Cut to today, and there is no defined aesthetic, but rather an influx of maximalism, nostalgia, and Y2K—yes, everything does come full circle, re: the 20-year-trend theory. Today’s artists emphasize brand image by sending cultural messages with their styling—from Sabrina Carpenter’s signature corset-core dressing tour looks to Charli XCX’s Brat era of grunge to disco-dressing by Dua Lipa and Chappell Roan stunting in full drag, each artist is encouraged to be their authentic and vibrant self.
