The recent release of The Crown's fourth season resurfaced much of the drama and public opinion surrounding Princess Diana and Prince Charles's relationship, but new photos of Kristen Stewart as Lady Spencer prove that there is much more to the story. In the new Pablo Larraín movie Spencer, the Twilight actress plays late princess as she spends Christmas with the royal family at their Sandringham estate in 1991. Over the course of a few days, Diana contemplates the entirety, and possible end, of her marriage.
The fictionalized tale is based on true events, however, in reality, the royal couple announced their public separation in 1992, before ultimately divorcing in 1996. Only a year later, the mother of Princes William and Harry tragically died in a car accident fleeing from paparazzi in Paris.
In the photo, Stewart looks away, troubled by something off-camera. Her facial expressions and body language are eeriely accurate to Lady Di's own. The shot also depicts the star in a black pussy bow blouse, a vibrant red Chanel Fall/Winter 1988 coat, and a wide-brimmed black hat with a matching veil. The stirring picture showcases the Charlie's Angels star's acting chops, as well as an insight into the iconic fashion moments one can only imagine will be on display throughout the film.
Although not much about the project has been released to the public, production began in Germany earlier this month. Sean Harris, Timothy Spall, and Sally Hawkins have also reportedly been cast in undisclosed roles.
