It's something about the summer that brings a little bit of the hopeless romantic out in all of us, and these movies and TV shows are sure to satisfy the itch to indulge in a rom-com. From the popular June release, The Materialists, to Lena Dunham's return to TV writing with <a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/film-tv/lena-dunham-girls-new-show-too-much-netflix-cast-meg-stalter-emily-ratajkowski" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Too Much</a>, we've gathered the best romantic comedy movies and TV shows of 2025 thus far.&nbsp;
It's not uncommon to hear someone say, "They just don't make rom coms like they used to." Many of us grew up on classics like <a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/fashion/julia-roberts-pretty-woman-dress" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Pretty Woman</a>, 10 Things I Hate About You,&nbsp;or&nbsp;13 Going on 30, making it tough for anything released in the last decade to compete. But after seeing the latest crop of romantic comedies, we have a feeling that 2025 is their renaissance year.
The year started strong with the latest addition to the Bridget Jones rom-com film franchise, called Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy, starring the original cast of Ren&eacute;e Zellweger, <a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/film-tv/hugh-grant-young-photos-movies" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Hugh Grant</a>, and Colin Firth. This raises the point of the other 2025 film trend we have been noticing: remakes of fan-favorite romantic flicks. The internet has been buzzing about the new shots of <a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/fashion/anne-hathaway-daring-2000s-looks" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Anne Hathaway</a> and <a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/film-tv/meryl-streep-young-rare-photos-movies" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Meryl Streep</a> shooting&nbsp;<a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/fashion/the-devil-wears-prada-2-first-look-at-andy-sachs-outfit-anne-hathaway-see-all-the-looks" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The Devil Wears Prada 2</a>, and <a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/fashion/pamela-anderson-style-evolution-best-looks-90s-2000s" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Pamela Anderson</a> starring in the new <a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/fashion/pamela-anderson-ferragamo-the-naked-gun-movie" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Naked Gun</a>&nbsp;set to release on August 1.&nbsp;
While familiar favorites are sure to grab our attention, the films we have highlighted below bring a new cast of characters with their own unique, messy, and beautiful love stories for us to enjoy. Some of these picks have been out since May, and others might not come until September, but they all make the cut for the summer's best rom-coms. Whether you have been in a long-term relationship or are on all of the apps, the new hit film The Materialists gives viewers a look into what dating is like in this day and age. The story follows Lucy (played by <a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/film-tv/dakota-johnson-madame-web-movie-interviews" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Dakota Johnson</a>), a professional matchmaker in New York, as she navigates her own quest for love. She finds herself torn between the highly successful businessman, played by <a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/men/pedro-pascal-cannes-red-carpet-eddington-photocall" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Pedro Pascal</a>, and her ex-boyfriend, played by <a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/film-tv/chris-evans-most-iconic-roles-movies-avengers-captain-america-knives-out-not-another-teen-movie" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Chris Evans</a>. This is the second film from the Canadian director, Celine Song, who was behind the 2023 favorite, Past Lives.&nbsp;If you haven't seen it yet, this summer is the perfect time to catch&nbsp;The Materialists&nbsp;in theaters.&nbsp;

Oh, Hi!&nbsp;premiered at Sundance in January, and is coming to select theaters on July 25, just in time to fill our need for a summer rom-com. The movie stars&nbsp;The Bear&nbsp;alumni, <a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/film-tv/molly-gordon-films-tv-iconic-roles-theater-camp-the-bear" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Molly Gordon</a>, and Perks of Being a Wallflower&nbsp;favorite, <a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/film-tv/logan-lerman-best-roles-percy-jackson-perks-of-being-a-wallflower-bullet-train" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Logan Lerman</a>, as they venture on a weekend getaway that takes a turn. The new couple discovers they are not looking for the same things, which definitely leads to some tension. Will they leave the trip happier than they were when they arrived? It's official: <a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/pop-culture/dakota-johnson-chris-martin-relationship-dating-breakup-rumors" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Dakota Johnson</a> is the newly appointed queen of the romantic comedy. The actress stars in the new Neon film, Splitsville, which dives into the complexities of open relationships. The story follows the non-monogamous couple, Julie (Dakota Johnson) and Paul (Michael Angelo Covino), as they find themselves in a difficult situation with their friends, whose marriage is on the rocks. The film&nbsp;premiered at the <a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/fashion/celebrity-red-carpet-looks-cannes-film-festival-2025" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Cannes Film Festival</a> in May and is scheduled for a limited theatrical release on August 22 and a larger rollout in September.

Summer of 69 is a rom-com flick centered around Abby, a timid high school senior, played by Sam Morelos, who discovers her longtime crush, Max, played by Matt Cornett, is recently single. She stumbles upon the knowledge that he is obsessed with a particular position in the bedroom, and sets out to unlock her sexual side. In the process, she enlists the help of a stripper who goes by "Santa Monica," played by the SNL favorite, <a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/fashion-week/chloe-fineman-runway-diary-carolina-herrera-fall-winter-2025" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Chloe Fineman</a>, to be her teacher. The two develop a unique friendship as they work to help Abby seek Max's attention. The movie was released on May 9 and is exclusively on Hulu.

We all know Lena Dunham from the classic HBO series&nbsp;Girls, and as much as everyone on the internet loves to rewatch and discuss the celebrated show, Dunham has some new content to bring to our screens.&nbsp;<a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/film-tv/lena-dunham-girls-new-show-too-much-netflix-cast-meg-stalter-emily-ratajkowski" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Too Much</a> follows the life of Jessica, played by Megan Stalter, as she takes a job in London and subsequently meets Felix, played by <a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/film-tv/who-is-will-sharpe-too-much-white-lotus-actor" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Will Sharpe</a>. The show is a classic Dunham hit that is both silly, emotional, and a little bit bonkers.&nbsp;In fact, Too Much is loosely based on the actor's time in London, where she met her now-husband, Luis Felber, and the two produced the show together.&nbsp;

The Amazon Prime series,&nbsp;Overcompensating, is the brainchild of online sensation <a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/men/benito-skinner-dior-men-fall-winter-2024-photo-diary" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Benito Skinner</a>. The semi-autobiographical show follows Benny (Benito Skinner) as he enters college while remaining deeply in the closet. In his first week at school, he becomes friends with Carmen, played by Wally Baram, and tries to fit in with the "popular" crowd. His older sister (Mary Beth Barone) and her boyfriend (Adam DiMarco) are popular seniors whom Benny tries to appeal to, but finds are a lot less perfect than they may appear. The hilarious show, which has been out since May 15, navigates sexuality, identity, and authenticity in a highly entertaining way.
