Almost a decade after attending his first Met Gala, Luke Evans returned to the event for its 2026 iteration. Every year, the industry's biggest designers, stylists, and attendees bring finely crafted, insightful, and ultra-chic looks to the red carpet, but this year's theme, "Fashion is Art," demanded special attention to the enduring link between fashion, art, and culture.&nbsp;
For the affair, Evans&mdash;who is currently starring as Frank-N-Furter in The Rocky Horror Picture Show&mdash;sought to bridge the connection between art, identity, and self-expression with his look. In collaboration with his stylist, Christopher Brown, and the Spanish label Palomo, he conceived a bold outfit inspired by Tom of Finland and his striking, statement-making sensuality. The final ensemble is a structured burgundy leather jacket, the house's signature leather trousers, and a matching tie, elevated by the introduction of a delicate chiffon shirt. Meanwhile, metallic stud detailing and a sculptural hat&mdash;developed in partnership with Spanish milliner Vivas Carri&oacute;n&mdash;bring the look together.

"There&rsquo;s something incredibly poignant about that kind of gay art&mdash;its boldness, its defiance, and its beauty&mdash;and it felt important to honour that influence in a way that feels both contemporary and deeply personal."

Read on for the actor's full breakdown on his ensemble&mdash;plus insights on the power of costuming in theatre, his Tony-nominated performance as Frank-N-Furter in The Rocky Horror Picture Show, and his post-Met plans.&nbsp;

L&rsquo;OFFICIEL: What was your vision for your look at this year&rsquo;s Met Gala? How did that initial idea evolve into your final ensemble as you worked with Christopher?
LUKE EVANS: I wanted the look to feel intentional, something that sat between structure and sensuality. My instinct is always to approach clothing almost architecturally - how it frames the body, how it holds presence in a room.
From an early age, I&rsquo;ve been captivated by the artwork of Tom of Finland. Therefore, Christopher and I both knew this was the direction we wanted to pursue. We spent time studying vintage magazines featuring his illustrations and developed the concept of me as one of his characters brought to life, stepping out from paper and ink.
With Palomo, we experimented with leather, studs, and material combinations to shape a silhouette that felt modern while still drawing on traditional, uniform-inspired elements. Finishing touches&mdash;a white gold case and diamond-encrusted Hublot Big Bang watch and a pair of Ray-Ban aviators&mdash;completed the look, adding a sense of drama and performance.
L&rsquo;O: What does the link between fashion, culture, and art mean to you? How is the theme reflected in your look for the evening?
LE: To me, fashion is one of the most immediate forms of storytelling. It reflects where we are culturally, what we value, and how we choose to present ourselves to the world. It&rsquo;s art you live inside of.
For this theme, I leaned into that idea of &ldquo;costume as narrative.&rdquo; The look isn&rsquo;t just decorative, it&rsquo;s expressive. It holds intention, references, and a sense of character. There&rsquo;s always a dialogue between past and present in what we wear, and I wanted that to be visible in the final look.

L&rsquo;O:&nbsp;Art is at the center of this year&rsquo;s dress code and Costume Institute theme. Do you have any favorite pieces, artists, mediums, or movements that resonate with you?
LE: I&rsquo;ve always been drawn to forms of art that sit at the intersection of discipline and expression. Ballet is a perfect example of that&mdash;the level of control, repetition, and physical rigor behind it is extraordinary, but what you see on stage is pure lightness and emotion. That contrast really resonates with me: the idea that something so structured can feel so effortless and alive.
I&rsquo;m also very drawn to abstract art. I like that it doesn&rsquo;t tell you what to feel, it invites you to bring your own interpretation to it. There&rsquo;s a freedom in that, a kind of emotional openness that I find incredibly compelling.
And then on the other end of the spectrum, I love graffiti and street art. There&rsquo;s an immediacy to it, a rawness, and often a sense of rebellion. It exists in real time, in public space, and it reflects culture as it&rsquo;s happening. I find that energy very powerful.
For me, live theatre is probably the most exquisite medium of all. There&rsquo;s nothing between the performer and the audience&mdash;no edit, no filter. It&rsquo;s happening in real time, and it disappears as quickly as it arrives. That makes it incredibly fragile but also incredibly electric. There&rsquo;s a shared energy in the room that you can&rsquo;t replicate anywhere else, and that immediacy is something I&rsquo;m constantly inspired by.&nbsp;
L&rsquo;O: The Costume Institute&rsquo;s 2026 exhibition theme is Costume Art. Are there any costumes that you&rsquo;ve put on over the years that hold a special place in your heart?
LE: There are a few, but the ones that stay with you are the ones that shift something internally. A great costume doesn&rsquo;t just sit on you; it informs how you stand, how you move, how you think.&nbsp;
I&rsquo;ve had the privilege of wearing pieces that immediately change your posture the moment you put them on. Those are the ones you remember, because they become part of the performance itself.

L&rsquo;O: Speaking of costumes, your current role as Frank-N-Furter in The Rocky Horror Picture Show has one of the most iconic looks in theater history. Was there anything that surprised you or made you consider the character differently after putting on the look for the first time?
LE: Absolutely. The first time I put on Frank&rsquo;s look, it shifted everything. There&rsquo;s a vulnerability to it, but also an incredible power. It demands confidence, but it also exposes you in a way that&rsquo;s quite confronting.
What surprised me most was how much the costume unlocks the character. It removes hesitation. It forces you to commit fully. Once you&rsquo;re in it, you understand Frank on a completely different level. There&rsquo;s no halfway point.

L&rsquo;O: Outside of special occasions like the Met Gala, how would you define your style? Do you have any major fashion inspirations that drive the way you dress?
LE: My day-to-day style is quite considered but understated. I like pieces that are well-made, that fit properly, and that feel effortless. There&rsquo;s always an element of structure, but nothing that feels overworked.
I&rsquo;ve always been inspired by classic Hollywood figures&mdash;Steve McQueen, James Dean&mdash;men who made simplicity feel powerful. It&rsquo;s about confidence rather than excess.
L&rsquo;O: Across your career, you&rsquo;ve starred in numerous films and theater productions. Do you think any of the characters you&rsquo;ve portrayed would wear your look for the evening, or do you feel your personal style is starkly different from any of those roles?
LE: There are definitely overlaps. I think elements of my personal style inevitably find their way into the characters I play, even subconsciously.&nbsp;But a look like this is very much my own. It&rsquo;s a distilled version of how I see myself&mdash;more controlled, more intentional. Some characters might borrow pieces of it, but none of them would wear it quite like this.
L&rsquo;O: Now that you&rsquo;ve made your Broadway debut and are living in New York City, do you have any favorite spots in the city that you like to visit after a long rehearsal&nbsp;or decompress after a busy event like the Met Gala?
LE: New York has this incredible energy, but I&rsquo;ve learned you need to find moments of stillness within it. I love walking through Central Park&mdash;it resets everything. And then there are those quieter, tucked-away restaurants where you can sit, decompress, and just be present for a moment. After something like the Met Gala, that contrast, stepping out of the intensity into something calm, is exactly what you need.
