4 Things To Know About George Daniel
‘The 1975’ drummer sparked headlines this summer after news broke about his engagement to singer Charli XCX. Here is everything you need to know about him.
Drummer and music producer George Daniel has been a frequent subject of online discourse this summer. While he first gained notoriety as the drummer and producer for the popular band The 1975, which first formed in 2002, Daniel’s recognition has increased since collaborating with fellow musician Charli XCX and later getting engaged to her. If you’re curious to know more about the versatile artist, here are all the essential facts.
Drummer
Daniel began playing drums in high school. "I don’t really know why I wanted to start playing drums, I just did at school," he said in an interview with Coup De Main in 2016. When The 1975 was formed, he became the designated drummer, allowing fellow band member Matty Healy to focus on the vocals.
Record Producer
Daniel got into production work accidentally. He took music technology in high school and realized he had genuine talent after receiving full marks on his GCSE exam. His success motivated him to start doing music production at 16 in college, which was when he and his fellow bandmates began creating demos. His transition into producing for The 1975 happened naturally, and he has embraced his role of being the band’s soundscape engineer ever since. Daniel has taken his knack for producing to other artists, such as Caroline Polachek, Beabadoobee, No Rome, and Charli XCX for her 2022 album Crash and her summer hit Brat.
Label Music Head
This August, Daniel founded a new label called dh2 under the British independent record label Dirty Hit, which also houses The 1975. He released his first solo single under the subsidy titled “Screen Cleaner” and held a release party at Phonox in London where fellow artists and DJs made appearances.
Fiancé
Daniel and Charli XCX started dating in 2022, shortly after they collaborated on Charli’s song “Spinning.” The electropop artist announced their engagement in November 2023 on Instagram. Charli has spoken about how Daniel has been greatly influential in her creative process, and the two have shown their support of one another on and off social media.
