In her first documentary, Sofia Coppola paints viewers an intimate portrait of her friend of 30 years, Marc Jacobs.&nbsp;

<a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/film-tv/sofia-coppola-2025-moma-film-benefit" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Sofia Coppola</a> takes a big swing with the production of her first documentary: a profile on her longtime friend and collaborator Marc Jacobs. In one of her loudest and most propulsive films yet, Coppola creates a stunning portrait of her subject, comingled by their decades-long friendship, using a sea of clips, photos, and music cues that serve as a backdrop of New York's cultural lifeblood over the last 35 years.
For both Coppola and Jacobs, fashion has always been a point of connection. As a designer, Jacobs lives and breathes style, and any film fan can attest to the array of intricately designed costumes that have come to visually define Coppola's body of work. As two of the most prominent artists to come out of New York in recent decades, the friendship isn't just a working partnership&mdash;it's one that has come to embody the artistry and camaraderie that exists at the heart of the city.&nbsp;
She takes care to include Jacobs' favorite references, media she knows because of him, into the fabric of the film, such as Fosse. The immense trust Coppola and Jacobs have with each other is weaved into many aspects of the film, especially as far as references are concerned, Coppola holds Jacobs to a high regard, as she comments to <a href="https://www.indiewire.com/features/interviews/sofia-coppola-marc-jacobs-documentary-interview-1235185119/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">IndieWire</a>: "Marc always is such an encyclopedia of culture to me, of learning about artists and films that we both love&mdash;and the artists that he&rsquo;s worked with in his show, and Sonic Youth was at a show, and Rachel Feinstein did the sets&mdash;[and] how to incorporate all of that so, hopefully, it&rsquo;s preserved, and some kid might see it."&nbsp;

The vision the filmmaker creates of Jacobs is extremely intimate, having been filmed by Coppola herself on a Sony camera, and including shots that go in and out of focus, giving it a scrappier, personal feel. Given Jacobs and Coppola's close relationship, there was a very real possibility for both of them that the final product would be a point of contention. Fortunately, as Jacobs comments to&nbsp;IndieWire, "I really liked me."
The film shows clips of moments the two have shared throughout the years, and Jacobs was very happy with how his friend depicted him. On the other side of things, Coppola got a new perspective on Jacobs's everyday life, capturing in-between moments that, as a friend, she doesn't get to see often, such as fittings or behind-the-scenes scenes at runway shows.
&nbsp;She often appears in the film directing herself and Jacobs, but notes that she didn't want to be the sole focus of the film, as she tells IndieWire: "I wanted to feel like I&rsquo;m a part of making it without being&nbsp;in it too much, but it&rsquo;s clearly part of that&mdash;his friend is making it. So you hear my voice. I wanted it to feel personal that I&rsquo;m making it, but without being in it too much... I always feel like, anything I make, I want it to feel like I made it, because that&rsquo;s what I like about other filmmakers: seeing things that only they would make and having some personality in it."&nbsp;
For the film, Coppola did not capture as much footage as one might think, opting to use archival footage to give a more in-depth picture of the <a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/fashion/marc-jacobs-erotic-memorable-runway-looks-90s" target="_blank" rel="noopener">designer</a> instead.&nbsp;
Marc by Sofia is now out in theatres across the country.
