Each of the four judges creates a team of contestants. During auditions, the four judges sit turned away from the stage as the newcomers perform, and are only turned around if they hit their red button, indicating that they would like the singer to be on their team. If more than one of the judges turns around, the singer can choose whose team they would like to be on.
