Over a decade on, the creative directors are still full of surprises.&nbsp;

At Monse, deconstruction has always been a core philosophy. Suits are pulled apart, reconfigured, and put back together. Hemlines and waistbands are layered atop one another, and even the most romantic of dresses draw on traditional masculine styling.&nbsp;
“We started with deconstruction as a way to take something familiar and make it feel new,” Laura Kim tells L’OFFICIEL. “I don’t think that definition has really changed; it’s simply expanded across all categories.” 
Ahead of Spring/Summer 2027, Monse itself underwent that very same process. Kim and Fernando Garcia, co-founder and creative director, have balanced their work at Monse with their duties as creative directors at Oscar de la Renta. But after stepping down from the house in 2025, Kim and Garcia turned their full focus to Monse. Spring/Summer 2027 marks the first collection since that transition, and the beginning of a brand new era for the cult favorite brand.&nbsp;
This season, the “broken” tulip—a variant known for its irregular petals and unique color patterns—is the central image. Across the collection, the motif was reassembled and reimagined entirely: floaty organza dresses are emblazoned with the blooms, abstract fringe echoes the tulip’s signature color markings, and asymmetric draping mirrors the silhouette of the petals.&nbsp;

Below, Kim and Garcia expand on their new vision for Monse and the creative forces driving the Spring/Summer 2027 collection.

L'OFFICIEL: This feels like the beginning of a new chapter. Now that Monse has your full attention, what did you finally feel free to do with the brand that you couldn’t do before?
LAURA KIM: I myself feel more mature and grown up, which has reflected in my overall design language and process.
L’O: Did having Monse as your sole creative focus change the division of labor between the two of you? Do you think your individual design instincts have become more similar after ten years, or more different?
LK: Our individual design has always been and has stayed very different, but they both complement each other well, and we really appreciate each other's strengths. We’ve really just become more comfortable being ourselves.
L’O: What was the starting point for the Spring/Summer 2027 collection? When did it feel like you fully landed on its ultimate direction?
LK: We love the story of how the tulip-breaking virus creates the most beautiful tulips. There is something so beautifully resilient about the history of Tulip Mania and how the tulip market crashed in the 1600s, but the tulips themselves have survived.

L’O: Was there a piece in this collection that felt like a breakthrough for the new era and made you realize, “This is the&nbsp;new Monse”?
FERNANDO GARCIA: The fringe pieces feel like a true reflection of Monse. They take the tulip and explore how it unravels and decays, turning that imperfection into something beautiful. The denim illusion skirt is also a great example of how Monse turns something familiar and everyday and transforms it into something unexpected and elevated.
L’O: Your recent work brings the masculine and feminine sides of Monse much closer together, with a stronger conversation between tailoring and sensuality. Was that something you consciously wanted to explore for Spring/Summer 2027?
FG: We all have masculine and feminine sides of ourselves, so bringing this duality together felt like a natural evolution of Monse.
L’O: Monse has, of course, always been associated with deconstruction. Has your definition of deconstruction&nbsp;changed over the past decade?
LK: We started with deconstruction as a way to take something familiar and make it feel new. I don’t think that definition has really changed; it’s simply expanded across all categories.

L’O: If Spring/Summer 2027 is the beginning of Monse’s next decade, what do you want this chapter to be about?
LK: Now that we’re focused on Monse full-time, we really want to expand the world of the brand by building each category in a meaningful, thoughtful, and well-merchandised way.
L’O: After working together for more than a decade, are you still able to surprise each other?
LK: Fernando shocks me every day. This morning he brushed breadcrumbs off my dining table onto the floor, like my apartment was the street. So yes, somehow there are still surprises.
