Unlike the countless other trends that have swept through fashion over the years, the boho girl is one that has never quite left. Categorized by its loose, flowy, patterned, and beaded clothing, one can almost always see influences of boho style in fashion. Boho, short for bohemian, style grew into a trend during the 1970s, as its wispy styles were a perfect fit for the growing hippie movement. The style was then epitomized by cultural icons like Stevie Nicks and Janis Joplin.
As the decade came to an end, the trend left fashion’s main spotlight until a resurgence occurred alongside the Y2K movement. This time, the trend was modernized to fit the time of the 2000s—mid-rise bell bottoms became low-rise while crochet flowy tops became crochet flowy crop tops. The 2000s boho style quickly became one of the dominating trends and was seen on celebrities such as Sienna Miller, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, Britney Spears, Nicole Richie, and Beyoncé.
Although we haven’t seen much of the boho style at fashion’s forefront for the past decade and a half, there is no doubt that alongside the roaring back of Y2K style, so too is the boho girl. Floral print, loose-fitting sets, shells, and crochet are being seen in street style, runway looks, as well as red carpet ensembles. Similar to the 2000s, however, this version of the boho girl has once again changed slightly to fit into the current fashion world. Instead of dense layering of multi-fabric pieces, we are now seeing a chic, neater version of boho style. Take a look below to see how to style the neo-boho look.
