From facial lotion to candies to extra-chill spa treatments, cannabidiol, or CBD, is derived from weed and has cropped up in a plethora of products and experiences in recent years. But what is this miracle ingredient, exactly? CBD is the second most abundant chemical found in marijuana, and it isn’t intoxicating (read: it won’t make you high) since it doesn’t have the psychoactive properties of weed’s dominant compound, tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC. CBD has been found to reduce stress, anxiety, headaches, period cramps, and is also purported to improve skin, sleep, and even orgasms, by increasing levels of the body’s very own CBD-esque compounds. It's even been successfully studied as a treatment for Alzheimer’s disease, Multiple Sclerosis, epilepsy, Parkinson’s disease, and cancer.
Those wide-ranging, seriously appealing effects are poised to be big business, too. The CBD industry is predicted to grow by a whopping 700% in the next two years, becoming a $2.1 billion market by 2020. However, the legal cannabis market is still wildly unregulated. A 2017 study at the University of Pennsylvania found that nearly 70% of CBD products purchased online for the study contained either less or more cannabidiol than advertised--as well as THC, in 21% of products examined. While higher doses than labeled aren’t dangerous, lower-than-promised amounts of CBD could make that oil capsule or candy totally ineffective.
As for its legality, it’s a bit complicated. Items containing CBD oil can be easily procured from both online and physical stores wherever recreational marijuana is allowed, while in some states, CBD sales are allowed though marijuana isn’t fully legalized (yet). Elsewhere, CBD products can be ordered online and delivered to your home, although technically, any form of weed is illegal federally. But it’s only a matter of time before legislation catches up with interest and demand for cannabis goods of all types.
